Review: V-Rally 4 (PlayStation 4)

Pros:

  • Really detailed graphics.
  • 29.24GB Download size.
  • An opening race where it will change settings based on your performance.
  • Intro videos for each discipline.
  • Three modes- V-Rally mode (Story mode), Quick game and Multiplayer.
  • Can set AI level with a slider that also affects how much money you make.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Racing gameplay.
  • Choice of 3 starter cars- Which one you pick will determine which race type you will start on.
  • Online leaderboards for all events complete with filters.
  • Full replay option after each race.
  • Crew management- Hire/fire your crew which will improve your team and performance like enabling faster repair times or reducing the cost of repairs and upgrades.
  • Each crew member has their own unique stats and abilities. You recruit them as they show up on the map.
  • World map is used for recruiting, Races and other events.
  • Decent loading times.
  • Car settings- Before a race, you can tweak all aspects of your ride from brake strength to brake bias to ride height.
  • You can set up your car by tweaking the individual presets for each surface type, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and custom.
  • Autosaves regularly.
  • Repair costs in a race come straight out of your winnings.
  • Unlock upgrades and cosmetics like liveries as you play V-Rally mode.
  • Half a dozen driving views including in-car dash cam and bumper.
  • Quick game is arcade mode in essence. Pick a car, track and weather and off you go.
  • Multiplayer- Splitscreen support and online with a quick join or create/join a server. Supports private lobbies.
  • Tracker on the side that shows progress and sections change color to let you know if you are ahead or behind the lap times.
  • Five disciplines- Rally, V-Rally cross, Hillclimb, Buggy, and Extreme Khana.
  • Colorblind mode.
  • Controller- Can rebind buttons, adjust deadlines and sensitivity.
  • Driving aids- ABS, TCS, Gearbox and clutch control.
  • Co-driver timings can be tweaked from far ahead to very late.
  • HUD- on/off, Turn certain parts off and on.
  • Full statistics screen.
  • Hip-hop sounding soundtrack.
  • Realistic sound effects.
  • Proper arcade racer.
  • Very fluid setup, Little time doing man management and more time for racing.
  • All disciplines are varied and a lot of fun to learn.

Cons:

  • No visible damage model.
  • Cannot have proper failures like wheels falling off or engine cutouts.
  • Very loose handling.
  • Slow to build up money.
  • The underside of the car has no detail.
  • Few ugly textures.
  • Doesn’t have many official race locations.
  • Slow starter because the early cars are complete dogs.
