Review: Midtown Crazy Race
Take part in mad races through Midtown in this tribute to car games from the late 90s.
Pros:
- Nice looking graphics.
- Point to point racer.
- Full car body damage.
- Practise mode which allows you to just drive around the huge city.
- Day and night racing. You can set which one by selecting it on the main menu. Also should be noted that it changes the menu as well.
- Loads of cars to unlock. Unlock cars by winning races.
- Full colour palette and you can change your car colour when ever you go back to the menu.
- 90’s arcade racer atmosphere.
- Small file size. 317.2MB
- Has a championship style mode where you have to win every race.
- Huge open city.
- Cars do look like licensed cars and the detail is incredible. They, for obvious reasons do not carry the licensed names.
- Uses the motion controls within the gamepad.
- Countdown mode which is a four car race against the clock mode.
- On the main menu you can see the skyline, use the stylus and you can look around at all the scenery.
- Off screen play, the game screen is mirrored on both TV and the Gamepad.
- Runs really well and at great speed it must be said.
Cons:
- Gyro/Motion controls only. Cannot use the d pad or analogue for movement.
- Steering feels a bit too floaty and un responsive.
- Feels like a ios game ported to Wii U.
- Short game with only a few different modes to play.
- No leaderboards.
- No replayability. Once you have done the races and unlocked the cars there is little else to come back for.
In Summary, It is a average game with some great ideas but is seriously lacking any real content. I mean the graphics are good and the city is a big huge detailed place. if it just had more modes and maybe some reason to use the open free roam aspect, It would have more potential. The lack of hard controls is annoying and i personally am not a fan of the gyro/motion controls being forced on me. If how ever your used to them and like the idea of it then you will have a short but ok racer. As a first time game on the eshop from a proven ios dev it is a step in the right direction and now just needs more console content. Its a beefed up ios port with ios content. If you want a throw away racer with mobile controls then give it a look.
