Alundra Review (PlayStation 3)

Our Alundra Review has us playing a game we never played before thus having missed this game the first time around, I couldn’t wait to get into it. Dubbed as a successor to Land Stalker I knew I would be in for a treat. I put the game on to my Vita for my first-ever play-through. Let us see how it fairs…..

Alundra Review

Alundra Review Pros:

  • The first thing to hit you is the graphics, They are rich and vibrant and have great detail.
  • Simple to learn controls.
  • Tutorial pop-ups as you play.
  • Gameplay I found felt a bit like Zelda, even down to destroying bushes for pickups
  • The music is a lovely ballad of both soft and energetic music. It really suits the game well and sets the atmosphere perfectly.
  • The story goes you play as Alundra a young boy capable of entering people’s dreams to help cure them of their evil.
  • The in-game story is a very dark affair but makes light of it with the wonderous sprites and in-game jokes
  • The story will easily take you around 45-plus hours to complete. Maybe double that if you go hunting out all the loot.
  • Each character has his/her own personality. This helps keep you interested as many action RPGs run into everyone sounding the same situation
  • Exploring the world map will reveal many of the game’s dungeons, this is where you will spend much of your time. They are really well done but can fall victim to having extremely hard puzzles. luckily we have the beauty of being able to use the internet to help us.
  • The controls are tight and really easy to learn. Fighting is good but can get hard. Allowing enemies to surround you will spell almost certain death so feel free to run to survive! There are a few platform sections scattered through which can get quite annoying, especially when they move around.
  • The game mechanics itself, at the time, was kind of outdated but to be honest I found they re-ignited the genre. None of these turn-based combat or scripted events. What you get is the ability to go out and explore the world for yourself, find and loot treasures to upgrade your equipment.

Alundra Review Cons:

  • The difficulty in some areas can be really tough. I mean really tough, like smash your pad through the tv hard.
  • The game doesn’t offer any additions like performance, State saves, etc.
  • Dying at any point in the game will put you back at your last save. This can be frustrating but then this in a way is how we used to game. We should be grateful we get to save at all!
  • Does not have trophies, More an FYI.

In summary, what you get here is a solid worthwhile experience. Once it gets a grip on you it will consume your time like nothing else. But on the flip side, the game is also a perfect fit for a casual go on a handheld. A bit-by-bit play-through will see good results. I cannot recommend this game enough for all the things the game does right. Yes, it has a few really annoying bits but what game doesn’t? Go grab it and have a blast…..

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
