Athenian Rhapsody Review (PlayStation 5)

Athenian Rhapsody Review is a fresh comedic RPG game in which you’ll explore the World of Athens! Your goal is to build your very own Rhapsody, the story of you (the player), and your epic tale in this world. Your story will unfold based on your decisions, to the degree of which cannot be replicated by any other player.

Athenian Rhapsody Review Pros:

  • Decent pixel art graphics.
  • 603.2MB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • You get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game.
  • Two characters with each having 3 variants.
  • Online connectivity option.
  • Action adventure gameplay.
  • Opening prologue setting up the story and basic controls.
  • Tutorials will pop up as you play and discover new mechanics.
  • You answer a series of questions that are both serious and jokey.
  • Download a munchkin through the game.
  • Has a lot of humor and jibs and Jan’s about your character.
  • Top-down 2D world akin to a Zelda game.
  • World globes act as save points.
  • A great cast of memorable characters.
  • Turn-based combat but it mixes it up a lot. Attacks can be a power bar press-the-button affair or the use of an item. You can build the friendship gauge up by doing nonviolent things like hugging or learning, enemy attacks change up but the general gist is you are in a confined box and move around to avoid projectiles.
  • You can use items and healing food from your bag in and out of combat.
  • A very fun chilled game.
  • End of combat breakdown showing earned EXP etc.
  • You see the enemies walking around.
  • Chill mode can be turned on from the pause menu and this makes fights easier and grants temporary Invincibility.
  • Stats in the pause menu show earned EXP, cash, etc, and keep a runner timer of game time.
  • Auto-run can be toggled.
  • Find cameras to take a picture of your current character and story, you can only have one picture saved at a time.
  • Bugs can be picked up and go in your pockets, they give you health or burst charge.
  • Earn badges for making friends in the world.
  • Main storage chest to put items in.
  • Puzzle elements pop up from time to time.
  • You earn burst in combat by doing nonviolent methods so waving, talking, etc.
  • Find presents that have rewards in them.
  • When you have a party you can change between characters in combat.

Athenian Rhapsody Review Cons:

  • Cannot remap controls.
  • No real settings.
  • You don’t get your health back when leveling up.
  • Slow starter and it takes a while to really get going.
  • Dying has you respawn at the last save point and you have to redo everything you did.
  • Whenever conversations trigger the pace slows right down and makes you think the game has frozen.
  • The inventory system is not clear or ideal.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
