Bang Average Football Review Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 76.1MB Download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Full controller support.
  • Graphics settings – resolution, graphics preset quality, fullscreen, particle traits, and animated match entities.
  • Football gameplay.
  • You can remap controls for both the keyboard and the controller.
  • Accessibility options – game speed, use high contrast hits, show player team indicators, disable flash, and disable screenshake.
  • Gameplay options – show fps, enable replays, pause when the window loses focus, and never use the controller for player one.
  • Three save slots.
  • Two game modes – quick match and story.
  • Character creator – name, male/female, skin, hair color, hairstyle, facial hair, and outfit.
  • Story mode has three difficulties – Easy, medium, and hard.
  • You can setup story mode to allow you to simulate matches, and skip opening cutscenes.
  • Team creator – name, nickname, and home and away kits.
  • Cool gimmick where the controls menu puts you into a closed-off area where you can see the controls and practice, this even happens when in a game.
  • Plays like Sensible Soccer in that you have control but it’s very loose and the ball doesn’t stick to your feet.
  • You see a power bar when holding down the pass or shoot button.
  • Full game stats breakdown after full time.
  • Outside of playing games in the story mode, you have a town that you can walk around, and interact with players, fans, and the chairman.
  • Reputation plays a part and you can see how you are doing by going to the pub and chatting with fans and the landlady.
  • Earn state points in story mode to put into either – speed control, passing, shooting, power, tackling, handling, and agility.
  • Practice mini-games can trigger before a game, they are optional but they usually carry a state point for finishing.
  • Full team management from assigning numbers to tactics and formations.
  • You get quests to do in the town and again these are mostly optional and can be done in any order.
  • The game has a story layer that is intriguing and well-implemented.
  • Colin’s challenge is where you get a set of goals to hit in order to earn more state points.
  • Earn coins from doing quests and from games.
  • Visit other towns interact with people and explore.
  • Controller assists – shot assist, pass assist, cross assist, and switching players (natural/reversed/basic). The assists can be set to (off/weak/strong).
  • Weather changes as you advance time or play games.
  • Auto saves regularly.
  • Multiple-choice encounters can happen in story mode.
  • Upgrade and improve the stadium using coins earned. You get control over what gets done.
  • Rain and snow will affect how the ball moves in terms of speed and accuracy.
  • All players have a rating out of ten.
  • You can set the mentality and pressing of the team.
  • Create and save your own team presets so you can swap between them before future games.
  • A lot of fun to play.
  • Scratches the retro itch for old football games.
  • Goal replays can be saved as a GIF.
  • Provides a solid challenge.

Bang Average Football Review Cons:

  • The dripps/practice could do with being before your first game.
  • People around time repeat the same lines a lot and it all feels very canned.
  • The controls take some getting used to.
  • Simulating a game is instant, you don’t get to watch it play out or anything.
  • The performance is not always great, I had it hitch or lag a fair few times which really messes up timing and charging shots.
  • Slow start with a lot of walking around and little tasks.
  • Simulate matches means it will simulate all games, it’s not a choice per game.
  • Doesn’t offer online play in any way.
  • Cannot skip or fast forward goal celebrations and replays quickly.
  • Doesn’t have official names and teams, more an FYI.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
