Summary

Beat Souls is a Rythm action game that uses a unique control system. You play as an avatar and move around to avoid obstacles either by jumping or moving but the true uniqueness is the Otomo that accompanies you on either side, you can move these guys independently or with you to hit the notes or beats should I say. It sounds basic but when you see it in action you understand, it allows the game to play better at faster beats Per minute. That brings me onto the songs and they are a varied bunch, with 45 levels to play you could say everyone will find a song they like but I struggled to come close, it’s just not for me and not a genre I can easily identify. The songs are quite short as the levels are bite-sized in nature but it’s still something I never gelled with. The controls are a cool concept at first but as you progress the busy nature of the screen and effects really dampen your enthusiasm to play but also able to play. You can turn effects off but even then it hardly helps and it’s because the actual play area is so claustrophobic and cluttered that it never really felt clean. Overall I found it to be a chore, it never really sticks and is probably one for the players that can love that fast-paced stuff.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
