Cthulhu Joins SMITE in Insane Update

Cthulhu has become the 110th playable character of
Hi-Rez Studios’ SMITE: Battleground of the Gods as the “Great Dreamer” update went live
just today, on June 16, 2020.
Overview
– Cthulhu is set to be the most impactful God release yet in SMITE. He is the most
anticipated God ever, with historic levels of community excitement following the
release of this cinematic teaser trailer.
– The popular Arena map has been refashioned as R’lyeh, the sunken city of Cthulhu.
– Incredible Summer Sales, including Gems at up to 33% off, are live now until June,
21.
– The ongoing Grim Omens event gets its final chapter full of high-quality skins.
From time immemorial, a cosmic entity has been lying asleep in a city lost to humans. An
unfathomable creature whose mere presence would plunge mortals and divinities alike into
madness. It is Cthulhu, the Great Dreamer, and today he awakens to quell those newer,
feeble Gods that have been ruling in his stead. Today Cthulhu takes over SMITE.
Many fans have long been wishing for Cthulhu to join SMITE, but few had high hopes. The
fan fervor reached new heights with the release of a new cinematic trailer, quickly becoming
so resounding that it could wake the dead. It certainly woke the Great Dreamer from his
not-so-eternal slumber. Cthulhu now enters the Battleground of the Gods as the newest
Guardian, joining the newly created pantheon of the Great Old Ones.
As suggested through his myth, Cthulhu’s gameplay revolves around aggression rather than
protection. In-game, his brilliantly ominous character model towers above most SMITE
Gods, and visual and audio effects impeccably add to the horror by corrupting the actual
interface of enemy players — as if intruding into their very mind.
The unnerving aura of Cthulhu is complemented with fitting gameplay mechanics. His
attacks drive opponents to insanity and he passively feeds on their madness. Once his
victims reach their tipping point, Cthulhu uses an ability that irreversibly shatters their mind,
forcing them to flee in fright and granting him permanent benefits. That sense of impending
doom extends to his second ability: Cthulhu can conjure a lingering putrid mire that
increasingly slows down enemies trapped inside, ultimately rooting them. With his ultimate,
Cthulhu reveals his true form, growing to an inconceivable size and gaining access to
devastating new abilities with a large area of effect. As long as Cthulhu is transformed, the
skies are blackened and the entire battlefield descends into R’lyeh, the nightmare corpse-city
from which he escaped.

There is one place where sunken R’lyeh has acquired permanency: Cthulhu’s arrival has
altered the map of the Arena, SMITE’s most intense and accessible mode, for the
foreseeable future. Players now battle it out in a vibrant underwater environment where
tentacled sculptures keep watch and lidless eyes protrude from walls.
Many are wondering whether creating Cthulhu has scared the Titan Forge Games crew out
of their wits in the literal sense, as unreasonable sales have been ongoing in SMITE since
June 12. Gems are discounted up to 33% off, dozens of chests are available at 50% off, and
all voice packs are half-priced. This themed Summer Sales is combined with a variety of
in-game events and will rage on until June 21.
Lastly, in-game event Grim Omens gets its final chapter, adding five new skins to the count
and reaching its apex in terms of both content and storyline.
