Deathcron Review (PlayStation 5)

Deathcron Review is a retro-style arcade game full of intense platform action, powerful attacks, and menacing enemies. In the recent past, an ordinary kid receives an urgent television transmission. Shortly afterward, an incredible battle mech known as the Deathchron arrives at his suburban home. Our young hero is then transported to an alternate reality where robots have taken over everything, and he has one chance to stop this dystopian vision from coming true.

Deathcron Review Pros:

  • Pixel art graphics.
  • 127.4MB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • You get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game.
  • 3 save slots.
  • Run and gun platformer gameplay.
  • Tutorial signs as you play.
  • NES era inspiration.
  • In-game cutscenes.
  • World map level select.
  • You are a kid in a mech, you can freely get in and out of the mech. As a kid, you can hack whereas the mech lets you shoot, jump etc.
  • Items like cars in the background can be used as a platform.
  • You can shoot left and right and also duck and shoot left and right.
  • 2D side-scroller world with animated backgrounds and foregrounds.
  • Great Chiptune-inspired soundtrack.
  • The controls are simple enough.
  • Health bar system for both the mech and the kid.
  • Slight puzzle elements within the levels.
  • Parts and cores can be found and can be dropped from enemies, this is the currency in the game for upgrades.
  • You can upgrade your health bar, and get new shot types, and new weapons.
  • Save points are scattered around the levels.
  • Big boss encounters.
  • You save your collected parts and cores even if you quit back to the map so you can in essence farm an area.

Deathcron Review Cons:

  • You cannot remap the controls.
  • No game options.
  • The tutorial signs are either very basic or missing key information.
  • The way in which the camera moves when transitioning scenes is very sudden and kind of nauseating.
  • Half the time you don’t know what counts as a platform and what doesn’t.
  • No sound effects for dying and the music just keeps going amd doesn’t reset or anything which is very immersive.
  • If the trophy didn’t pop for doing it, I would have never known what a save point looked like or if the even existed.
  • The level design is not always that great.
  • Checkpoints are far apart meaning a lot of replaying a level.
  • Hit detection is not great.
  • You get put in a lot of unwinnable situations.
  • Boss fights are just tedious.
  • Little replay value.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
