  • Cannot rebind controls.
  • The game doesn’t actually give you an initial chance to reload a save and instead has you jump straight into a new run.
  • The controls take a lot of getting used to as the face buttons are punch and kicks, triggers are jump and block.
  • The game doesn’t actually pause.
  • Brutal entry to the game with high damage enemies and none of the ineffective attacks explained.
  • Restarting has you doing the same route over and over and gets very old.
  • Big knockbacks from enemies.

Summary

Hitting you with a blend of BloodRayne and Castlevania, Demoniaca is a roguelike at its core but presents itself as a Metroidvania. Explore a labyrinth of corridors and rooms taking on all manners of the beast. It starts off rough more because of the difficulty than anything else, slowly you piece together the plot and player expectations all whilst battling the bastard hard controls. It just feels alien to use the triggers for block and jumping, even when I think I’ve nailed it il do some bone head jump and die. The combat however is a thing I wish more games did, its got a massive list of combos and attacks to do with more to add over time and makes every encounter feels like a round-in street fighter. One obtuse thing is how once you die that’s it, hitting restart (first option) you do a run going over the same sections and getting very bored of it, but if you hit menu then load you can then carry on with your previous life. How cack-handed that system is kinda summed up how I feel about the game, it tries things but won’t do it in a way that’s engaging or even accessible. Demoniaca is trying a lot and gets tangled up, falling over its own feet.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
