  • Action platformer gameplay.
  • Tutorial pop ups as you play.
  • Cutscenes are a mixture of in game and FMV.
  • 2D action with a full 3D backdrop amd character models.
  • Take out enemies by rolling into them, jumping on heads sore throwing items at them.
  • Tight responsive controls. P
  • Collect the letters in each level to spell KONG.
  • Bright colourful game world even when in the mines.
  • A lot of fun to play.
  • There are nine islands to unlock and play.
  • Co op partners play as Didy Kong and have a gun and Jetpack. This character is ideal for the younger gamer to play as.
  • Eight levels are taken and remastered from the 3DS version of the game.
  • Buy powerful items to help from the Cranky shop.
  • There are a lot of secret areas and alternate routes to find.
  • Banana coins are the games currency coins.
  • Red balloons act as lives, you can find them within the levels.

  • A lot of mine cart levels that are runner type levels.
  • Humour sprinkled through the game.
  • Big boss encounters at the end of an island.
  • Nailing a level and finishing it is still so satisfying.
  • Super Kong is an option you can opt in for at checkpoints where you get shown how to play the current level.
  • The levels get very elorborate and look fantastic.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Review Cons:

  • You cannot remap the controls.
  • There is no accessibility options like Colourblind etc.
  • You have to unlock the gallery entries and get none to start off.
  • Cannot skip all cutscenes or fast forward them.
  • It is a difficult game and aside from the different modes, they do very little to change the difficulty.
  • Checkpoints are bad and you usually land up having to replay large chunks of the level again and pickups like coins and letters don’t carry over all the time.
  • It’s so easy to press the attack button from reactions that it causes a lot of needless death and stress.
  • Enemies respawn back way too quickly.
  • No in game achievements.
  • I’ve had it a few times where it’s not always clear where to go or what is going on leading to cheap deaths.
  • You cannot move the camera around.
  • Annoying that in relation to barrels it’s very rare you can go back after missing a collectible.
  • Mine cart levels are tricky, mostly because of the speed and lack of awareness along with one hit kill enemies.
  • The performance is not perfect and stutters a fair bit.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
