Mines and Magic Preview (Steam Early Access)

For this Mines and Magic Preview, we play a Multiplayer tower defense auto battler with economy. Combine the unique abilities of your units. Expand territory and build mines to get resources. Find a balance between the economy and the army. Use spells to help your army. Relaxing, but challenging single-player campaign is available.

Mines and Magic Preview Pros:

  • Nice graphics.
  • 592.3MB Download size.
  • Optional replayable tutorial.
  • Tower defense gameplay.
  • Game speed slider.
  • Your FPS shows in the corner.
  • Can be played with just a mouse.
  • The general loop of the game is to build troops who protect your castle and you have to survive the waves.
  • Resources are what you need in order to build new units and you get these by building mines on the map.
  • Upgrade units to increase their stats and upgrade mines to increase their size and productivity.
  • Two ways to play – campaign and multiplayer.
  • Earn and use powerful spells and abilities.
  • Your castle can fire at enemies but it is weak and you earn less gold.
  • The multiplayer mode is 1v1 and is just a case of clicking find an opponent.
  • Online leaderboards.
  • All enemies and units will auto-attack.
  • You get a turn timer between waves but can just press go to hurry it up.
  • When placing units a grid comes up to make it easier.
  • You can see the upcoming enemy types and numbers.
  • Upgrading mines helps you get to new resource spots on the map.
  • Hover text pop-ups for the menus, abilities, and units.
  • Very straightforward.
  • It’s weird as over time the game gets quite addictive, usually takes a while as you want a whole load of units.
  • A mini-map shows resources and units.
  • You can earn gold from kills and buy new spells.
  • After every round/wave, all your troops are healed/resurrected.
  • Simple controls.
  • Sell units to recoup some money.
  • Scratches the itch for tower defense, army building, and even auto battlers.
  • Buy and use abilities for your castle.

Mines and Magic Preview Cons:

  • In the tutorial, it asks me to build a troll but doesn’t give me enough resources to build him.
  • No graphics settings at all.
  • Doesn’t have Steam achievements yet.
  • At times clicking the restart level will crash the game.
  • Unskippable opening animation of Orcs getting killed by a dragon.
  • The how-to-play text and images are clearer than the playable tutorial.
  • No music in the game.
  • Your units kill everyone and then just walk off the screen.
  • It takes a while to get going as early on it is just a handful of troops.
  • No dedicated pause button, instead you press the menu.
  • Only one game type at the moment.
  • The camera is edge scrolling which is not always ideal when using just the mouse.
  • You only get spells once per match.
  • There are many currencies and resources to learn and earn.
  • The range of mines is not always clear of what goes with what.
  • You cannot move your unit placements around.
  • No victory or defeat screens after a wave.
  • The ui is very basic and nothing really stands out.
  • Cannot customize the units, game settings, or even rebind controls and behaviors.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
