Old Skies Review – Puzzle Your Way Through Time

Old Skies review – Step into the shoes of time agent Fia Quinn as she navigates seven thrilling eras, ensuring history stays intact while uncovering mysteries along the way. With stunning pixel-art visuals and engaging puzzles.

Old Skies Review: Pros

  • Beautiful cartoon graphics.
  • 4.2GB download size.
  • From Wadjet Games, who gave us classics like Primordia, so good it made me like the genre again.
  • Game settings – dialog subtitles, speech text size, commentary mode, and auto-advance text.
  • The game has the left stick act like a mouse cursor, you can adjust the sensitivity of it in the options.
  • Puzzle adventure gameplay.
  • Tutorial prompts as you play.
  • It is a point and click game, but it’s what I like, to cool modern point and click. It’s not as mechanically heavy and sluggish as the older games in the genre.
  • Fully voiced characters who add a ton of emotion and depth to every conversation.
  • The world they have created is vibrant and colourful, full of intrigue.
  • Multiple choice encounters and conversations that can shape the story, or at the very least shape the way in which you interact with people.
  • The animations are crisp.
  • Hover over the screen and get text pop-ups giving a brief description, or click the text to have your character say something to herself about it.
  • The auto text is a godsend as it keeps the game moving and cuts down on button pressing.
  • Select destinations when you are on the walking sequence, it’s clean and easy to navigate.
  • I love the line deliveries and the main Character Fia is awesome, witty one-liners and antedotea help make her likable.
  • The story grabbed me within the first five minutes. I want to know what’s next, what’s coming up, and the game just keeps giving me that feeling.
  • You can fast click through conversations if you can read faster than they can speak.
  • A handy button hold will show all interactive elements within an area.
  • The game plays out on a screen-by-screen basis.
  • Good soundtrack.
  • Full inventory system and you use the classic point and click style mechanics, so drag and drop items/tools, etc, onto a point on the screen to get them to interact.
  • Near instant loading times.
  • Handy shortcuts for using items from your item bar by using the shoulder buttons.
  • Save when you want.
  • A Game that fits the handheld perfectly, put some headphones on and just forget the world around you for many hours or until you realise you are not near a power outlet and the batteries are running out, but whatever.
  • The historical archive is like an AI assistant in that you put in a search name and then get information from it. Actually, it’s more like a Web browser.
  • When multiple-choice entries come up, you can use the d-pad to scroll through them or use the more cumbersome cursor.
  • The story is the captivating part, it’s about time travel and how Fia works for a company that can shift and take you to different time lines, it’s funny seeing Fia ask about something that hasn’t been invented yet in her current time line or how she shifted into a new place and half of it is unrecognisable.
  • The satisfaction of solving puzzles is one of the best.
  • Again, the story is so well written and paced, you are always left guessing and can never predict what’s coming.
  • So many memorable characters and set pieces.
  • Presentation is top notch, all sci-fi and impactful.
  • Nozzo is your handler and can give brief tips along the way. The banter and chemistry between Nozzo and Fia is that of friends who know each other really well, causing a lot of humour and standoffs.
  • Double-tap a point on the screen to go there instantly.
  • You get to experience time travel like never before.
  • Such beautiful-looking locations and scenes.

Old Skies Review: Cons

  • It can be tricky at first to know what the game wants from you; it’s a typical feeling with games like this, as you can easily overthink it.
  • At times, it can feel frustrating when you don’t know what to do; the tips from Nozzo can be way too vague.
  • The music doesn’t change a whole lot.
  • No in-game achievements system.
  • The historical archive only works with found names and text, and you can’t write whatever you want.
  • At times, it does feel like a Pixel hint on the screen.
  • The game ended, which is the biggest problem.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
