Plunderer’s Adventures Review (Nintendo Switch OLED)

Our Plunderer’s Adventures Review shows off this pixel art tower defense action game where you use your trusty flintlock pistol and every trick up your sleeve to take down your opponents. Blast enemies as they cross the screen towards your crew. Take them down quickly and efficiently, and your crew will support you with extra lives, loot multipliers, and more, but fail to protect them from the onslaught, and they’ll be carried off by malicious marauders!

Plunderer’s Adventures Review Pros:

  • Decent pixel art graphics.
  • 42.7MB download size.
  • Tower defense style gameplay.
  • The game is played on lanes and you swap between lanes to shoot enemies.
  • The goal of the game is to kill all enemies and protect the girls behind you.
  • Unlock a new character to play as, levels, gallery entries, and girl styles.
  • Earn gold to use on ship upgrades to do things like lower cooldowns or increase shot power.
  • Enemies have hearts and shot lower them meaning different enemies take longer to kill.
  • You lose a life for every girl kidnapped.
  • You can get bonus crates mid-game like coins or extra lives etc.
  • Wave-based combat.
  • You unlock and get special attacks that have cooldowns.
  • Replay levels to earn cash.
  • Tutorial screen at the start of a level. Can be skipped every time.
  • Difficult.

Plunderer’s Adventures Review Cons:

  • No actual game settings just music and sound effects.
  • Doesn’t support touchscreen controls.
  • Difficult.
  • Cannot rebind controls.
  • Aside from the health aspect, very little changes.
  • After the first level, it gets crazy hard.
  • Because of the animation speed, you don’t get a lot of time to react or shoot people close up.
  • Feels a bit flat.

Summary

It never feels like the game tries to setup its own identity. For a tower defense game it does more things from the frustrating list than innovation. Animations make gunplay slow and tedious, you have a small window to shoot as it is but with a slow animation that window is even smaller. Enemies are generic looking and it’s only when you shoot them you can try and gauge how many shots will kill them. Basically it’s a safe version of a genre but adds in a load of NSFW style content from bikinis to blurred images. I can’t believe that they make the first level easy then the second level really difficult, that is kind of how it stays with constant up and down difficulties. I can’t say I ever truly had fun and instead felt frustrated and very little reason to try and push through.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
