Rainbow Six Extraction Review (Xbox Series S)

The aliens, monsters or maybe it’s just crazy people in cosplay? At any rate for our Rainbow Six Extraction Review, we go to the streets of San Francisco, New York, and wherever else these gits are hiding! This is Rainbow Six but not as you know it!

Rainbow Six Extraction Review Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 46.6GB download size.
  • 1000 Gamerscore.
  • First-person shooter gameplay.
  • VR training serves as a tutorial and you can play it with or without pop-ups.
  • Supports solo, friends, or random matchmaking.
  • Four locations – Liberty Island, Alaska, San Francisco, and Motel.
  • Four difficulties – moderate, cautious, severe, and critical.
  • Mute teammates button.
  • It’s all Player Vs Ai so PVE if you will.
  • Characters from Rainbow Six Siege are in it along with a few new operators.
  • Each operator earns their own exp, level up, and unlock new gear.
  • Overall rank which unlocks operators, map locations, and game modes.
  • Studies are like little challenges that help progress your character and the story. Each location has its own set of studies.
  • Cutscenes will appear as you progress.
  • Classic controls.
  • You can lose access to operators, if you go down and die then you will be taken by the aliens. Fret not as you can use another operator, go back in and rescue them.
  • EXP is only banked when you extract a mission so if you get taken so does your exp but you get it back when rescued.
  • Tense atmosphere.
  • Full stealth implementation.
  • All operators have signature abilities.
  • Ping system complete with call-outs.
  • Every time you enter a location you get 3 random missions, each one getting harder than the last.
  • An area is split into 3 areas separated by an airlock and at any point in any area, you can find and extract from the point.
  • Full gear customisation from charms, gun skins, player skins, sights, etc.
  • Edit load out.
  • Operator health carries over to other missions.
  • Heal operators who are injured/rescued by finishing incursions with other operators, how well you do will determine how much health they get back.
  • React tech tree where you use level-up points to unlock new gear.
  • With enemies becoming aware/alert of you it’s possible to kill them quickly before they scream and alert others.
  • All the Nests will make a gross squidgy noise and they spawn new enemies but can be taken out.
  • The Nests and enemies will put their slime down on the floor and this makes enemies move faster and you move slower. You can clear it with gunfire, grenades, or melee.
  • Buddy Pass – Invite two friends to play 14 days of Rainbow Six Extraction for free with you, from any platform, even if they don’t own the game.
  • Find points of interest and lure in levels.
  • Every run feels different.
  • DBNO (Down but not out) state allows you to shoot your gun and kill the enemy still.
  • VR training is very thorough and even helps you get to grips with the mission types and how the studies’ challenges work.
  • Uplay Connect support with free gifts for owning other games by Ubisoft.
  • Progress whilst slow does feel rewarding.
  • Many enemy types.
  • Rescuing a taken character is a mini-game where you push and pull them out whilst also shooting these pulses that help keep them stuck.
  • When a teammate goes down you do get an opportunity to pick them up and carry them to the extract point.
  • Every location feels unique.
  • Some environmental damage as Sledge can knock some walls down and enemies may charge doors.
  • You can barricade and strengthen walls/doors.
  • The vaulting system is in here.
  • Makes the recon drone an essential bit of kit as you can mark enemies, ammo, health, nests, and objectives safely.
  • Health can be temporarily extended with health boost pick-ups in-game.
  • Every area in a level has a time limit.
  • You can keep going even if you fail a mission.
  • New difficulties open up as you level up.
  • The UV light on your gun will show the outline of enemies through certain wall types.
  • Missing in action is the state a player will go into if left behind after the airlock closes.

Rainbow Six Extraction Review Cons:

  • A lot to take in.
  • Has no PVP modes.
  • Online with randoms can be hazardous to your health!
  • The stealth takedown takes some getting used to.
  • You feel very weak health-wise and go down easily.
  • Unlocks take a long time.
  • The game on a whole has a small amount of content feel.
  • You have to unlock the locations meaning you will play the same place over and over.
  • Has instances of study progress not counting.
  • A small number of guns on offer.
  • The icon for the airlock and extraction are the same color and not immediately easy to differentiate
  • Random players can hinder your game enjoyment by ending an area via an evac point regardless of if you want to or not.
  • The chat wheel is not ideal.

Summary

Right, let’s get this out there straight away so you know where I stand. Rainbow Six Extraction is a good fucking game man. It’s the best roguelike shooter in ages, it also happens to have a team-based Co-op but for me, it’s just a straight-up roguelike. Die in a mission and you lose access to that operator until you go back in and rescue them, the exp you earned with that operator is still on them so you get nothing when failing. You also have an overall rank that is all banked as you earn it regardless and can still have you unlocking new things. A level will have 3 random missions with each mission located in its own part of the level separate by airlocks. This setup means you can do as many of the 3 missions as you like as you can extract at any Extraction zone on the map. I love how the locations randomize spawn points, enemy placements, and missions, u really like how it’s all against the Ai, the unlocks are slow and it is actually quite a difficult game but the satisfaction of completing a mission or extracting is next level. Oh I should also mention an operator’s health is persistent across all playthroughs and they only get health back by staying in HQ and clearing missions with other operators. The levels are tight with many ways to play or take out enemies. Operators are from Rainbow Six Siege and come with a unique familiar ability from Siege, for example, Sledge has his hammer to knock walls down and Doc has a med gun. To be honest, it’s a great game for Co-op but it’s another level of crazy to play solo, the tension is biblical but the rewards are orgasmic, OK not orgasmic more just regular satisfying but I had to try to hype it up after using the word biblical. Rainbow Six Extraction will not be for everyone but for roguelike fans and Co-op against bot players, it’s a good game with a great story and so much variety and depth. Make no doubt about our minds, it feels like it should be a cheaper game. It has the feel and air of an aaa game but not enough to warrant a high price tag, dare I say it has a lot of the free-to-play traits kinda laid down ready. It’s just such a mixed bag layered with a huge dollop of marmite. It’s on Gamepass, give it a try.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
