Review: Chime Sharp (PlayStation 4)

Chime Sharp takes Chime’s classic dynamic and updates it for 2017. The core rules are the same but the aesthetic is clean and modern and the game’s soundtrack has been completely refreshed.

Pros:

  • Clean clear graphics using a more 3D approach this time round.
  • Full Platinum trophy.
  • 812.4MB Download size.
  • 15 levels each with their own song.
  • Each level has five modes to unlock: Practice,  Standard,  Sharp,  Strike and Challenge.
  • Puzzle game play.  cover the area with tiles within the time limit.  think Lumines meets Tetris. As you must combine odd shaped blocks to cover the play area, but also get the multiplier going by making blocks before the ever moving line goes across the screen ala Lumines.
  • Earn bonus time in game by chaining and scoring high scores.
  • Tutorial consists of a loading screen or clicking a button in the extras menu.
  • Multipliers allow you to rack up higher scores.
  • Fast loading times.
  • Easy to pick up and play.
  • Lots of replay ability.
  • Full online leader-board support with track, Difficulty, Friends or global filters.
  • extras to unlock.
  • End of level breakdown showing: quads,  largest quads,  highest multiplier,  total coverage,  time played, score and high score.
  • Fun and frantic game.

Cons:

  • Cannot change options in game.
  • Songs are not to everyone’s taste.
  • No real tutorial. It doesn’t explain how multipliers and coverage work for example.
  • Certain colours clash making it hard to see what needs clearing.
  • You have to unlock the better game modes.
  • Unlocking new tracks can take a while as its all dependent on skill.

Summary

Chime sharp builds upon the previous game, It has a load of song and modes to unlock. I just wished it would explain everything in a much cleaarer way so you can get cracking on unlocking new songs and modes. That said the game is an absolute blast as its fast as it is clever. Going for a high multiplier really adds the sweat to your brow. In short if you want a fun challenge you cant go far wrong with Chime Sharp.
