Summary
Going for an old-school 3D horror effect, Senses Midnight is a game that tries to blend static backdrops with a 3D model. For these it absolutely nails it, all the way down to having optional tank controls baked into the game, no the problem that is most evident here is the frequency of the camera changes and the total lack of direction. I spent ages searching around and to be honest when I did find something of not or regressed the story it felt like luck or that I just happened to stumble into progress. The camera changes are jarring but manageable, it’s the camera changes mixed with movement that really gets me for it can all be going well on a seemingly straight bit of path, and then bang camera cut and you are now walking into a tree you didn’t see before and now you are basically hugging. When you do get into the gameplay it does have a lot going for it as it mixes in some Project Zero type paranormal camera work. I came away from Senses not hating it but frustrated that it wouldn’t help introduce the game to me.
