Shelter 3 Review (Steam)

For our Shelter 3 Review, we discover what happens when a leader falters. The matriarch needs your help to get to an important destination, and you must keep everyone safe along the way. Decide which paths to take as you lead the herd through the matriarch’s forgotten places – but choose carefully, for each path has its own shadows.

Shelter 3 Review Pros:

  • Really nice papercraft-looking graphics.
  • 1.7GB download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Graphics settings – graphics quality preset, small objects, medium objects, large objects, and very large objects view, animal density, anti-aliasing, v-sync, fullscreen, and resolution.
  • Input settings – Invert axis and sensitivity sliders, and set camera mode to either free, player follows, or camera follow.
  • Handrawn art cutscenes mixed with in-game segments.
  • Your goal is to guide your herd to safety and get food and water as you travel.
  • Run into trees to have fruit drop.
  • Frolic in the water, shoot water over your body, and have a good splash.
  • The locations are nice.
  • You have to make decisions at times.

Shelter 3 Review Cons:

  • Cannot rebind controls.
  • No controller support.
  • Only seven achievements.
  • Unskippable opening segment.
  • The game is under 2 Hours long.
  • It’s not as in-depth as the previous games.
  • The controls are terrible and not fun to use.
  • The pace of the game is painfully slow and clunky.
  • All decisions and interactions with your herd fall flat and feel empty.
  • At times it feels like you are on your own and the rest of the herd acts like a shadow rather than part of the herd.
  • Animals within the world don’t react well if at all.
  • Constant performance issues.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
