• Shadow Generation lets you choose between performance and fidelity graphics.
• 3 save slots per game.
• Invert the axis and sensitivity sliders for the Shadow Generations game.
• Free DLC for classic Sonic skins.
• Two games in one – Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations.
• A cutscene option lets you set up the story for Shadow.
• Action platformer gameplay.
• Tutorial pop-ups appear as you play, and you can chat with the characters in areas to get tips.
• Online game manual accessed via a QR code.
• The main hub world lets you freely explore and select levels and challenges.
• Each stage has two acts and is called Act 1 and Act 2. Act 1 is the traditional 2D Sonic experience, whilst Act 2 is a mix of 2D and 3D and more of a newer remixed version of the same level.
• Each level has a handful of five red star tokens to collect, with each giving a reward like images, concept art, music, characters, et,c and if you visit the room in the hub, you can look at them.
• When you unlock new music, you can choose which track to play.
• Every level has many routes and secrets to find, and with the collectables, it makes every level highly replayable.
• Levels have a timer, and your three best clear times are shown on each individual level and Act.
• Controls are familiar and easy to remember, even when jumping between 2D and 3D.
• Glorious-looking levels.
• A fantastic soundtrack that has new and classic tunes.
• Enemies can be killed by dashing into them, jumping on them or using the homing attack in the 3D act, but the usual spin or jump on head attack for the 2D acts.
• Sonic Generations has you going through the different variations of the Sonic franchise, each Act has its own version of Sonic, whether that’s the modern version or the more pixelated old school Sonic.
• Online mode is a ranking attack mode where you can upload a clear time against other players.
• Earn points from playing the game and exchange them for skills at the in-game shop in the hub.
• Skill customisation lets you create a couple of skill loadouts that can change up how Sonic plays, for example, you can have it so you are faster or you start with rings, etc.
• Each level gives a rank, with S being the best.
• On-screen button prompts and icons show lock-on possibilities.
• This, for me, could be the first Sonic game where I think it is too fast!
• Handy spin dash button, so no more holding the down key and pressing the button, now it’s just one button.
• Each area has challenges you unlock to earn keys and then face bosses. Each challenge is unique and can be things like racing or even playing Pinball on a Pinball table. Sounds obvious, but it’s not Sonic Spinball.
• Ring the bell above the challenge rooms to spawn a music note that will move around on a timer, and hit it in time to unlock bonuses.
• Chaos Emeralds are obtained by beating Metal Sonic in set boss battle races.
• In-game cutscenes sometimes look like animated cartoons.
• Chao are little creatures from Sonic Adventure that you can find and collect in levels.
• You can go back to the main menu to select a different game.
• Both games play and look different.
• On Shadow Generations, your hub is a huge, open 3D area you can explore and find secrets and levels in.
• Find keys in the challenge and use them to unlock chests in the Shadow hub area.
• I love the colour palette in Shadow as it’s all black and reds, the presentation feels darker with more aggressive music.
• As a shadow, you can and will unlock new gameplay-changing abilities.
• Shadow is a game that takes the Sonic formula and builds on it with more actions like the ability to slow down time, shoot out electricity to open doors, get gliding, etc, whilst maintaining old school moves like homing attacks and spins.
• Both games have a lot of set pieces and transitions where you don’t have direct control, but they look really good.
• I really do like the more advanced take in Shadow.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS Review Cons

• No in-game achievements system.
• Boss fights can be difficult, just due to the 3D implementation or the camera.
• Some could say this game is too quick.
• When changing the music for a stage, it plays over the top and doesn’t feel integrated, it plays loud and over cutscenes where you feel it shouldn’t.
• Just the options alone, Shadow Generations is a more advanced game; they didn’t add any of the new options like performance or fidelity options to the base game.
• When the game is moving, and that is a lot of the time, it can be really hard to make out obstacles, the route, and enemies.
• I found myself forgetting to blink many times.
