  • This game gets into the action and frantic nature quicker than some games I have played recently.

  • Boss encounters happen and they spawn alongside the enemies already on screen and continue to pour in.
  • Very impressive onscreen enemy count.

Spellbound Survivors Review Cons:

  • Only has two areas to play in.
  • The only replay value is trying to survive as long as possible because the upgrades take so long that it’s not a feasible incentive.
  • Only two characters and it’s just a case of one being melee and one being ranged.
  • Does have a clear difficulty ramp where it lets you arm up in like five minutes then you just get destroyed unless you get weapon lucky.
  • Cannot see the boss’s health and they are huge bullet sponges.
  • You cannot rebind controls to say use the mouse or anything.
  • The mouse cursor stays on the screen.
  • No leaderboards or records of your runs.
  • Very grindy for the upgrades.
  • No stats screen.

Summary

Spellbound Survivors is a game with decent graphics and a download size of 189.08MB. It offers Steam achievements and has its own in-game achievements as well. The game features two playable characters, Rounin and Raven, each with unique stats. The controls are simple, using just the WASD keys.

Inspired by the Vampire Survivors genre, your character auto-attacks while you move around, collecting gems from defeated enemies to earn experience points. Leveling up gives you a choice of three upgrades, which you can keep improving by increasing their level.

The game is very addictive and gets into the action quickly. Boss encounters happen alongside regular enemies, leading to impressive on-screen enemy counts. A power-up book allows you to permanently upgrade your stats using gold, and you can refund and reallocate gold as needed.

However, the game does have some downsides. It only has two areas to play in and only two characters. The replay value is limited to trying to survive as long as possible because the upgrades take a long time to earn. Bosses are huge bullet sponges and you can’t see their health. You also can’t rebind controls or remove the mouse cursor from the screen. There are no leaderboards or records of your runs, and the game can be very grindy for upgrades.

Despite these issues, Spellbound Survivors offers a fast-paced and challenging experience for fans of the genre. The locations look fantastic, especially the rain map, and the game runs at an impressive speed without any slowdown or hitching. Overall I found this to be a strong game of the genre and I have played a lot of them recently. This one goes for a faster on-ramp approach and while it still needs finessing it is still some of the best fun. I am definitely keeping my eye on the updates for this one.
