STARNAUT Preview Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 10.07GB Download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Own in-game achievements.
  • Full controller support.
  • Graphics settings – screen mode, resolution, resolution scale slider limit fps, v-sync, graphics preset, benchmark test, view distance, anti-aliasing, post-processing, shadows, global illumination, reflection, texture, effects, foliage, and shading.
  • Opening tutorial section.
  • Great soundtrack.
  • 3rd person action roguelike gameplay.
  • Controller settings – Invert axis and sensitivity sliders.
  • Mouse and keyboard support.
  • The mouse has a sensitivity slider.
  • Sniper mode is where you can zoom in and use the reticle to aim.
  • Your weapon (antenna) auto fires.
  • Run based gameplay.
  • Before a run, you choose your weapon.
  • Little gotcha style balls are around which can be punched open for Rewards.
  • The shop is a droid that follows you about.
  • On the screen, you can see your stats.
  • Excellent looking green screen computer screen interface.
  • Earn coins from enemies and find them to spend in the shop.
  • The in-game shop lets you buy upgrades to your attributes such as max HP, healing, attract, and your weapons.
  • On the main menu you can buy new weapons and gear, and a seperate shop deals with your attributes, you spend gems here and the unlocks and upgrades are permanent.
  • In-game cutscenes and character interactions.
  • Hud and damage numbers can be turned on and off.
  • Play how you want.
  • Basically, for every run you need to Launch rockets and you have a set amount of time to get to them before your oxygen runs out and you have to pay the fee to fire the rockets off.
  • Nitro can be stored and used to do really high jumps or speed forward.
  • You are armed with your weapon, a punch, and a double jump.
  • Wide open areas.
  • It feels like a game I would find in a backstreet game shop in Japan and get it out of curiosity but fall in love with its weirdness.
  • Impressive on screen enemy count.
  • Jump pads help you get around the world a lot quicker.
  • Hot springs can be used to replenish health.
  • A compass at the top helps find the rocket and any points of interest.
  • In the game moving around runs well.
  • When you die you can buy a respawn with collected credits or start again.
  • Enemies can drop health and magnets to pick up all coins.
  • The game is split into levels and launching all ten rockets clears it and unlocks a new level and world area.
  • Unlock the ability to play as different characters.
  • Buy new weapons and have them attached to you allowing over time for you to have a string of weapons all acting independently.
  • Easy mode can be bought in-store for free.
  • Excellent-looking presentation of the world and characters.

STARNAUT Preview Cons:

  • Doesn’t do the best job of describing what’s happening and what the loop is.
  • Menus can be a bit fiddly and unclear.
  • Text goes over each other in-game making it hard to read.
  • Cannot remap controls for either the controller or the mouse and keyboard.
  • Coins can be worth different amounts but they all look the same.
  • The base speed of the character is really slow.
  • For the Hud, it’s all or nothing as you cannot customize what you see.
  • Had an enemy glitch into me twice where it stayed and did damage to me consistently.
  • It’s just a game that constantly chucks enemies in front of you.
  • Feels like the game just repeats the same cycle over and over.
  • Finding the rocket is easy but getting to it always lands up having to find the right teleporter or jump to get me to the platform.
  • Level design is not great as it has so many dead ends and up-high platforms.
  • Steam achievements didn’t unlock and pop until I shut the game down.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
