Stygian: Outer Gods Preview Pros:

  • Awesome graphics.
  • 11.49GB download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Full controller support.
  • Graphics settings – Window mode, resolution, v-sync, quality preset, field of view slider, motion blur, anti-aliasing, super resolution, post processing, and auto set quality.
  • Gameplay settings – set sprint and crouch to toggle or hold.
  • Mouse and keyboard support.
  • Controls settings – you can invert the axis and sensitivity sliders for the controller and mouse. Both the controller and the keyboard controls can be remapped.
  • Set controller icons to Xbox or Playstation.
  • 3D headphones support.
  • Five save slots.
  • Three game difficulties – Easy, Normal, and Hard.
  • Adventure gameplay.
  • Tutorial pop-ups as you play.
  • First-person view.
  • A full 3D game world, and you can move 360 degrees.
  • You answer some multiple-choice questions that can make stats better or worse, so it’s a kind of character creator.
  • Memorable and impressive sequences and set pieces.
  • I really like the atmosphere of the game.
  • The game uses the Occult as its main theme, but it has Lovecraft’s influence and many otherworldly elements.
  • Lighting makes every inch of the place drip in despair and gloominess, it’s awesome.
  • At the start, you get to pick a Seer card to add an ability to your character – heavy melee attack, stealth foot steps, perfect blocks, talk to the killing dead, highlight Interactive points while scrying, use artifacts, deal a lot of damage to the back, and lift heavier objects.
  • Due to the themes, the game does a lot of different realm switches, and they can happen at any time; they look so good and add so much.
  • Multiple-choice questions and answers can shape the path you follow within the story.
  • Such a beautiful, if a bit rundown and full of evil, location.
  • Workbenches let you craft anything you’ve got the blueprint for.
  • Materials and resources can be found in the world.
  • The stamina system is in play for fighting and running.
  • Hack and slash like combat, you can block, etc, but it’s very much a fist fight with occasional weapon usage.
  • Investigate occult structures and items to try to work out what’s happening in this town.
  • You can pick up items and throw them, depending on what they are, and they can break.
  • In many instances, there are multiple ways to get them done.
  • Has a strong detective vibe as you are in a town that’s gone weird, like Lovecraft’s dark descent levels.
  • You can pick locks, find keys, etc.
  • In-game cutscenes and character interactions.
  • A really cool feature is that you save at a mirror, and saving causes it to smash! It’s the small things, but I love it.
  • Central chest to transfer items into.
  • The game’s atmosphere (I go on about it again) is so good, even the way the leaves blow in the wind, to the rain and noises, it’s so good.
  • The map fills in with points of interest as you discover them.
  • A lot of puzzles and general exploration are needed.
  • Due to the theme of it all, my sanity is a big deal and is affected as you discover and see Occultish things.
  • The hot bar lets you quickly go through items and weapons, on the controller,r it’s the d pad.
  • Use the environment amd items to distract enemies.
  • The journal keeps tabs on quests and clues.

Stygian: Outer Gods Preview Cons:

  • They only have Xbox 360 or Playstation 4 button icons, so no generic or Nintendo ones.
  • No real accessibility options like Colourblind support.
  • Clicking auto-set graphics can sometimes cause the game to hang.
  • As soon as I get to the outside portions of the gam, the performance just nose dives and drops frames, gets choppy, and is generally unpleasant.
  • Finding what can or cannot be picked up is not easy, as they don’t have a great tell like flashing, etc. I mean, they do flash, but it’s very slight, and you can sometimes miss them.
  • It’s a shame you can’t save when you want, as you never know when you are going to be near a save mirror.
  • A few weird robotic robotic-looking people in their movements.
  • You can stealth in the game, but you don’t have any indicators on how you are doing or if someone sees you. I mean, the silent footsteps will help, but that Seer card was not the one I wanted, so being a stampy stomp stealth ninja, it would be cool to have indicators or tells.
  • Tutorial-wise wise it is just what button to press to do this or that; there isn’t really much to help with combat, stealth, or what icons mean.
  • Inventory, map, and anything but the start button does not pause the game.
  • The game world has a ton of detail, but you don’t get to interact with it like opening drawers and cupboards; it’s very sterile in that you only pick up a set type of resources, and it kind of kills the mood.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
