Submarine Survivor Review Pros
- Decent cartoon-like graphics.
- 431.8MB download size.
- Platinum trophy.
- You get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game, meaning you can potentially earn two Platinum trophies!
- Colourblind support.
- Two ways to upgrade: passive unlocks and the ability to upgrade your submarine.
- You get to start with 1000 credits, so you can do some unlocks and upgrades.
- Six submarines to earn and unlock, each with unique stats and features.
- The game manual, like the tips menu, has images and text.
- Three game difficulties, but you only get one initially, then you unlock the others. The difficulties relate to how much damage enemies do and any modifiers.
- A run will have you creating a map (randomised), and you can choose to play it or roll another, which will let you pick what mission and location you take on.
- The game plays like Vampire Survivors in that the only control you have is the direction and upgrades; the shooting and specials are automatic.
- Pick up EXP shapes to fill your bar, and upon doing so, pick one of three random upgrades.
- Enemies can drop exp and coins.
- 2D game world.
- You can reroll upgrade choices.
- The healthbar system and enemies can drop health.
- A lot of environmental hazards can happen, depending purely on what missions you pick.
- You can see where and when the enemy is attacking.
- At the end of a run, you can have a full breakdown of what and when you and how much.
- Mystery boxes can appear with random rewards.
- When you die, the map is lost, and a new one is generated.
- Chips can be earned and rewarded that are used in your submarines, you can sell, break down, upgrade, and modify them to change your stats and abilities.
- At any time, you can refund all your points to reallocate them.
- Fast loading times.
- It’s a game that is accessible and quick to action.
- Yes, you can pause the game.
- Impressive on-screen enemy count.
- The map mechanic really mixes it all up and adds variety and a ton of replay value.
- Picking the same upgrade again and again levels them up and improves them.
- Find blueprints, currency, and use them to unlock new submarines.
- When you hit the mission criteria, you have three choices: complete immediately, finish the current wave, or do the challenge wave.
- After finishing a level, you get to spend your points and everything before doing another run.
- Big boss encounters unlock as you do levels, and unlock them.
- I am glad that you keep all upgrades and everything from level to level, as long as you don’t die.
Submarine Survivor Review Cons
- You cannot remap the controls.
- Slow starter as you get your bearings, and the starter gun/laser is bad.
- It’s funny, but you level up fast and frequently, but the nature of the early game upgrades makes it slow.
- At times, you are not always sure what an obstacle is.
- Hot detection does feel a bit off at times.
- Game over is abrupt and not satisfying.
- I wish the upgrades for upgrades was more clearer, it does say it’s a level up for an upgrade, but it needs to be clearer.
