Super Mario RPG Review Cons:

  • No quick save and instead you have to find a save point.
  • The performance does dip in places and is more noticeable in docked mode.
  • Hides many features of the genre behind upgrades or abilities like being able to see the enemy health bars or getting a surprise attack etc.
  • Very text-heavy sections.
  • Your first party member is really weak and for a long time.
  •  Aiming your jumps can be tricky with the 3D.

Summary

Super Mario RPG is a visually stunning game with beautiful graphics that are presented in 3D, making the entire game feel like a diorama. The game is an action RPG with turn-based combat, where abilities and attacks have a mechanic where pressing a button at the right time causes bonus damage. The game also features big boss fights and in-game cutscenes, adding to the overall immersive experience.

The game offers two difficulty levels – Easy and Normal, making it very accessible. As you progress through the game, you earn experience points and level up, allowing you to choose one of three stats (health, strength, magic) to upgrade. You can recruit new team members who share FP (a fancy word for magic) and level up individually. The game also features an inventory system where you can equip new gear which affects the stats of that character.

Super Mario RPG has a world map that lets you fast-travel to any discovered area and replay levels freely. The game also features a Monster list that acts like a bestiary and adds in encountered enemies and a scrapbook that acts like a mission list and recaps previous entries. The game also has a how-to-play section that acts like a text and images-based manual with controls overlay.

The game has a few drawbacks, such as performance dips in places, especially in docked mode. It also hides many features of the genre behind upgrades or abilities like being able to see the enemy health bars or getting a surprise attack. The game also has very text-heavy sections, and your first-party member is quite weak for a long time.

Overall, Super Mario RPG is a beautifully designed game with a lot of depth and replayability. It offers a unique blend of action and RPG elements, with a focus on strategy and character development. Despite a few minor drawbacks, it’s a game that’s well worth the download and proves once again that Nintendo knows how to bring a game back, remaster it, and release it.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
