Usurper Soulbound Preview Cons:

  • No Steam achievements.
  • Clunky to use the controller on menus.
  • Not the best loading times.
  • Hard to see the stamina bar above your player’s head at times.
  • No voicework.
  • Dealing with mobs is hard.
  • Slow pace.
  • You don’t get any camera control.
  • Items/scrolls and any loot at all is just a little spark of color and text.
  • Very dark game.
  • Hard to judge attacks.
  • Has this powerful lock-on mechanic whereby as soon as your character locks on you walk slower, this is tedious in the tight corridors and the range is so far it’s sometimes baffling.
  • Walls don’t always go transparent to allow you to see.
  • To kind of guide you around they lock doors off by a level requirement.

Summary

Usurper is an action-adventure game that is going for a lot, it likes to use the Dark Souls moniker, it tries to inject some dark Gothic vibes and it has its unique feature of taking over enemies’ bodies and using them. In reality, it makes a game that is solid but very difficult in that the camera is fixed, the combat is very slow with a lot of Dark Souls-inspired battling. I want to like the game a lot but as it is it needs more polishing. The powerful lock-on from like four countries away makes it a jarring experience to navigate the dungeons, I just don’t like how dark and confined it all is, it makes for not the best experience. It’s less about cool interactions and more just plodding along and hitting things. It’s early access so plenty can change, the game is very playable now but it’s rough in places and smooth in others. Overall I would say if you can handle slow combat and tight spaces then fine otherwise hold off for a few updates.
