Review: Blacksea Odyssey (PlayStation 4)

Enter the Blacksea Odyssey, a violent top-down rogue-lite space shoot ‘em up RPG brimming with colossal creatures and runic technologies. Explore dangerous, interstellar spacescapes as you hunt enormous space-behemoths with a harpoon and rune-infused spears.

Pros:

  • Simplistic yet impactful graphics.
  • 309MB Download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Shmup with RPG and Roguelike elements gameplay.
  • Four characters- You only get one at the beginning, Each one has unique abilities and buffs.
  • Twin stick shooter.
  • Weapons- Speed boost, Harpoon, and spear to shoot.
  • Destructible environment.
  • Dismember parts of the enemies.
  • Bounties- Missions, You get a list of them each with a difficult number and location.
  • Earn credits in game and doing bounties.
  • Buy/sell within the shop at the menu.
  • Difficult.
  • End of bounty breakdown.
  • Massive levels.
  • Hidden loot boxes scattered around.
  • Levels have many enemy types within them.
  • Feels as daunting as a game like Monster Hunter. You need to learn Boss patterns, Plan strategies and generally learn to adapt on the fly.
  • Save and quit option.
  • One of the best mini-maps in the business, Looking like a map you see in a Sub or Airport, It will highlight enemies and loot within your vicinity and it’s surprisingly easy to read.
  • Boost- Two types short and long, You can use this to get away but also break the scenery.
  • Harpoon- Does mega damage and can be charged to a couple of levels for more damage. This is the weapon that can rip parts off of the enemy.
  • Game randomizes every level.
  • Craft/find/equip many items to customize your weapon loadout.
  • Tons of replayability.
  • Satisfying to play.
  • Every level has a timer going.
  • Handy pop-ups to let you know if shots are blocked or if a part is ready to be ripped off.
  • Massive epic bosses are in each level and every fight is unique and tough.

Cons:

  • Very slow starter.
  • Doesn’t do the best job of explaining what you have to do.
  • Not a lot of time to collect rewards from boss fights.
  • Shooting at the start is slow and tedious and to be honest this is where the difficulty comes in early on.
  • Rewards feel stingy.
  • RNG will dictate how well you do.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
