Review: SteamWorld Quest Hand of Gilgamech (Nintendo Switch)

What awaits you is a luscious treasure chest filled with gold, dragons, vivid worlds, magic, knights in shining armor as well as XP, turn-based battles and all that good RPG stuff! The game’s humorous mix of traditional fantasy and steampunk robots makes for an unforgettable experience with lots of laughs.

Pros:

  • Gorgeous graphics.
  • 940mb download size.
  • RPG card battler gameplay.
  • Brief tutorial with ongoing support.
  • Can rebind controls.
  • Speed up game animation option.
  • Three save slots.
  • Turn-based combat where actions/attacks are tied to cards. You have an action point system to control how and what you can use.
  • In battle, you can discard a card for another random one.
  • Deck builder–full control, you have to have 8 cards and can mix and match anytime from the menu.
  • Play how you want mentality.
  • Enemies roam the map so you can get a sneaky first hit in first.
  • Clear easy to understand hud and menu.
  • Simple to learn and you are ready to go in minutes.
  • Earn EXP and level up to increase your stats and sometimes random rewards.
  • Game is split up into chapters then levels.
  • Can replay levels.
  • Each level shows how much treasure you found. (100%)
  • Chain-play 3 cards from the same character to do their special attack which is represented as a fourth card.
  • Merchant-buy/sell/craft cards/items/weapons.
  • Meet new people and manage your team of 3.
  • Puzzle elements throughout.
  • Colorful locations.
  • Perfect for the Nintendo Switch.
  • A lot of fun to play.
  • Boss battles.
  • Decent story.
  • Lovable characters.
  • Collosium-in between chapters you can face off against enemies that that increasingly get harder for unique rewards.
  • Hero statue-save point that heals and revives your team but also revives the enemies.
  • Easy controls.
  • Decent soundtrack.

Cons:

  • Slow starter as enemies have high health and you do such little damage.
  • The gameplay does feel repetitive.
  • RNG can ruin fights.
  • Replaying levels still trigger all the cutscenes and dialogue.
  • Can’t change loadout in fights.
  • Massive difficulty spikes especially late game.
  • Checkpoints are far apart so a lot of repetition.
  • Crafting takes a while mostly because of the slog to get materials and coins.
  • Few maze-like scenarios that feel bullshit.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
