  • A full run history is in the hub, and it does make interesting reading as it lets you see how you are evolving and improving.
  • The hub area is surprisingly big and has a lot of new elements to add to it.
  • Online does its best to have everyone’s progress synced up, but it does give a disclaimer that this is not always possible.
  • The big boss encounters and huge reward.
  • At times, usually after a boss fight, you can enter a small affair or tavern and hire a partner or heal up, learn some story, etc.
  • Hired soldiers will fight alongside you, and this can make combat a bit more manageable.
  • Shops can be found with items to help improve your stats or add buffs.
  • Help and rescue people to have them move to your hub, and they always add a new element to your game.
  • If I had to be pushed for what the game plays like, I would say Dragon’s Crown.
  • Eventually, you will unlock a guy called Wisshelm the Archivist, and he will have a load of optional side quests that you can do naturally and get some rewards.
  • The world and how you interact with it are clever, and you can end up discovering a whole new area or storyline in a way, complete with different bosses and objectives.
  • As you beat bosses, you get items to spend in the hub to then unlock new Arcanas.
  • It’s a game you can easily get into and just plough hours into it.
  • When you pick an Arcana for a run, you get to see a demonstration of it before selecting it.
  • Every run you start on empty, no materials or resources carry Iver from the hub.

Absolum Review Cons

  • No Colourblind support or text sizing or font, etc.
  • Cannot use the assist settings in online games due to balancing.
  • The combat is very button-mashy, and you don’t natively get a good way to counter or avoid attacks.
  • There is a real issue with how many health and health items you get happen or appear.
  • The general gameplay flow is repetitive, and you will replay chunks of the game over and over.
  • You cannot venture backwards only forward, meaning you can easily miss drops.
  • I found it hard to judge distance and lining up attacks, and it was more noticeable in boss fights.
  • The game could do a better job of explaining mechanics and what’s going on.
  • With all the fighting, it is a bit of a downer; you don’t really get loot from enemies.

Summary

Absolum Unleashed: The Thrills and Highlights of Gameplay
Absolum Unleashed throws you into the thick of a roguelite rebellion, where every run reshapes the battlefield. You’ll punch, conjure, and combo your way through a regime ruled by the Sun King Azra, with a cast of outcast heroes wielding forbidden magic. Combat is fast and fluid, with Arcana attacks, throwable weapons, and branching paths that keep each run fresh. The hub area lets you upgrade, unlock shortcuts, and interact with rescued allies who add new layers to your journey. From explosive dwarven tactics to necromantic swordplay, Absolum Unleashed delivers a beat ’em up experience that’s packed with choice, chaos, and charm.

Absolum Unleashed: Where It Falls Short Key Negatives
Despite its flair, Absolum Unleashed stumbles in a few key areas. Combat leans heavily into button-mashing, with limited options for dodging or countering attacks. Health pickups are scarce, and the inability to backtrack means missed loot stays missed. Online play disables assist settings, and there’s no colourblind support or text scaling. Repetition creeps in as you replay chunks of the game, and boss fights can feel clunky due to awkward hit detection and unclear mechanics. Loot from enemies is minimal, which dulls the reward loop, and the game could do more to explain its deeper systems upfront.

Absolum Unleashed Immersive Story and Narrative Elements
Set in the outlawed magical realm of Talamh, Absolum Unleashed builds its rebellion through hand-drawn cutscenes, fully voiced characters, and comic book-style pop-outs that bring the world to life. You’ll meet colourful allies and foes, uncover secret areas, and unlock side quests from the Archivist Wisshelm that expand the lore naturally. Tavern stops and campfires offer moments to heal, hire help, and learn more about the uprising. The story unfolds through interactions and environmental cues, letting you piece together the rebellion’s roots without slowing the pace.

Absolum Unleashed: Visual and Performance Aspects
Visually, Absolum Unleashed is a stunner. It’s a 2.5D world that bursts with animated backgrounds, glimmering interactables, and stylish effects that never overwhelm. Accessibility options like reduced flashes, desaturated backgrounds, and player outlines help tailor the experience. You can tweak luminosity, remap controls, and adjust vibration and volume sliders to suit your setup. The game runs smoothly across both PS4 and PS5, with a shared trophy list that lets you chase two Platinums. From the hub’s evolving layout to the slick Arcana demonstrations, Absolum Unleashed nails its presentation with flair and function.

Absolum Unleashed: Overall Verdict: Is It Worth Playing
Absolum Unleashed is a punchy, stylish roguelite that rewards persistence and exploration. While its combat can feel chaotic and its systems underexplained, the sheer depth of its world, character variety, and upgrade paths make it easy to sink hours into. The rebellion in Talamh is worth joining, especially if you’re after a beat ’em up with heart, grit, and a touch of forbidden magic. It’s not flawless, but it’s fiercely memorable.

Back of the Box Quotes

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
