For this Alterium Shift Preview, we play a retro-inspired RPG that evokes an instant and recognizable feel for SNES-era JRPGs. Choose one of three unique heroes on a mission to prevent a catastrophic conflict between two worlds. Discover a world built on the mysterious power of Alterium Essence and an intertwined story that can affect your characters beyond your chosen hero’s storyline.

  • Three characters to choose from – Atlas, Pyra, and Sage and each has a unique weapon and element.
  • Envokes a 16-bit era game with its graphics, animations, and storytelling.
  • Multiple choice encounters and questions.
  • Stunning world map where it is 3D and you can move around it as a giant character.
  • Has a running playtime counter.
  • Uses menus that are akin to games like Final Fantasy.
  • Save when you want from the menu.
  • The map fills in points of interest as you play.
  • Unlock fast travel points.
  • Tutorial pop-ups as you play.
  • You have opportunities to do additional tutorials and it is usually optional.
  • Turn-based combat.
  • End of combat breakdown showing earned EXP, cash, and any loot.
  • Click items and objects to get an info text pop-up.
  • The first thing you do in the game is a combat and a written set of tests that can give rewards.
  • It feels like the game will play out differently for everyone.
  • Dying resets you back to a checkpoint which is usually the area entrance.
  • Fishing activity is available from the start, you can change the rod and bait used.
  • Get resources and materials from fights with creatures and monsters.
  • Find treasure chests around the world.
  • You do have enough open areas that you can explore a bit and go off the beaten path.
  • Alterium essence is used for casting special abilities.
  • Earn EXP and level up to get new abilities along with more how and AE (Atrium essence).
  • Encounters are a mix of you see them and also you get ambushed.
  • When you level up you also get your health and AE refilled.
  • Take on or discover optional side quests.
  • You can get parts of a quest before you are given the actual quest.
  • The game world has these vista-like sections where you use a weapon to trigger an environmental change or see your objective.
  • A must for Final Fantasy fans.

Alterium Shift Preview Cons:

  • No Steam achievements at the moment.
  • Does feel zoomed in no matter the settings.
  • No voice work.
  • Cannot rebind controls. (it does say it is planned)
  • You can’t see the enemy health bars.
  • The combat takes some getting used to as you need to plan accordingly.
  • Fishing is a unique thing and has a slight learning curve.
  • Slow starter.
  • It’s slow to bring up the map or screen transition.
  • There is no camera control which can obscure your view.
  • When I a forest or any location you don’t have a smaller map, it’s always the world map.
