PLUMP POP PS5 Review – Taito’s Bouncy Arcade Classic

Arcade Archives PLUMP POP brings a bizarre and bouncy twist to the classic block-breaking genre, trading in standard paddles for a cast of characters tossing their friends into the sky. You’ll be navigating a screen filled with spaceships and floating targets, trying to keep your partner airborne while dodging chaotic bounces. It’s a colourful, high-energy trip back to the 1987 Taito original that feels right at home for anyone looking for a quick, addictive retro fix.

Gameplay Review & Mechanics Breakdown

The game is a spin on the block-breaking genre of games, except you lob a guy up in the air and knock out spaceships. Hitting spaceships causes the character to bounce all over the place, bonus score and power-ups can drop from enemies, and you just have to catch them as they fall. I never played the game before, but had seen it. It’s great to tick it off my list, and it’s one I will keep coming back to.

Getting used to the movement speed and when to go higher in jumps is the only true learning curve. It is a more difficult game because the character can bounce in any direction after hitting a ship. You can control the characters with the D-pad and the analogue stick, and you can jump and time it to cause the thrown character to jump up higher. The game is stupidly addictive and a great little retro treat.

Summary

THRILLS & HIGHLIGHTS
Beautiful 8 Bit graphics make this a great little retro treat that is stupidly addictive. It’s a proper spin on the block-breaking genre where you lob a mate up in the air to knock out spaceships, catching bonus scores and power-ups as they drop. The different modes like HI score, Caravan, and Time Attack keep the challenge high, and having a Platinum trophy is a massive plus. I’ve always wanted to tick this one off my list, and it’s a game I will keep coming back to.

KEY NEGATIVES
It is a more difficult game because the character can bounce in any direction after hitting a ship, making it tougher than your average brick breaker. Getting used to the movement speed and when to go higher in jumps is the only true learning curve you’ve got to master. Also, the multiplayer is local only, so don’t go looking for online matches here.

OVERALL VERDICT
Arcade Archives PLUMP POP is a fantastic, frantic slice of Taito history. Whether you are chasing a 5-minute best in Caravan mode or grinding for that leaderboard spot in Time Attack, the simple joy of timing your jumps to throw your character higher never gets old. It’s got that classic 90s “one more go” factor that makes it a perfect addition to the PS5 library. If you want a quirky, challenging 8-bit experience that rewards precision, this is a must-play.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
