DAVY x JONES and the Locker’s Last Laugh – A Headless High-Seas Showdown
In DAVY x JONES, death is just the opening act. Betrayed, robbed, and beheaded, the infamous pirate captain plunges into The Locker, a shattered, surreal afterlife adrift on seas of cloud and shadow. Here, his headless body and wisecracking skull form an unlikely alliance, battling cursed fiends, legendary behemoths, and the ever-looming spectre of Blackbeard. With sword, pistol, grappling hook, and a living whale-ship at your command, every island conquered is another step toward reclaiming your legend or losing what’s left of your sanity to the abyss.

- In game cutscenes and character interactions mixed with these really good impactful cartoon like sequences.
- First-person shooter adventure gameplay.
- Tutorial pop-ups as you play.
- Excellent voice work and soundtrack.
- The world is all 3D, and it looks beautiful from the boats to the colourful yet chilling underwater world. It is really impressive.
- You can skip the cutscenes and advance interactions.
- It’s a story that instantly grabs you and sets it out early on.
- Combat is, at its core, hack and slash, but you can parry attacks and even projectiles. You have a ranged and a melee weapon bith that have charge attacks.
- It’s an interesting take on the lore. You play as Jones, the body, and you get help and use your head, called Davy. Get it? Together they are Jones Davy! Sorry, I mean Davy Jones.
- Use Davy to hook into enemies and grab items around the world.
- The map uncovers as you explore and fills in as you discover points of interest.
- Many Breakable objects you can smash and find parts and materials.
- Unlock new abilities within the skill tree like air stomps, roars, and crazy combo attacks.
- You can give orders to your head, Davy, like collect health or attack or distract an enemy.
- Use a hook to swing around the world, but also grab enemies towards you or use them for travelling distances.
- Fancy a change in pace? How about slappy face? Take with Davy and challenge him to a slap off, where you can block and count each other’s attacks.
- Daby has his own humour and mannerisms which break the seriousness of the h20 nightmare you are in.
- Find and open loot chests, but they are actually shark skulls you open.
- Attack the fish around you and get materials and resources from them, but you can also anger them, which is weird, as they are usually placid.
- The game world is not linear, and you can break off and explore and find secret areas etc.
- Find and activate checkpoints.
- Dying takes you back to the last checkpoint.
- The game is a lot of fun, more for the grandeur of the world and the setting, but the combat can get very technical with different enemy types and environmental factors.
- When the game is moving, it really flows, but it does hiccup a lot.
- I love the art and design of the world but also the weapons.

DAVY x JONES Preview Cons
- No Steam achievements.
- Should really have headbob, etc, in an accessibility menu to make it clearer.
- No support for Colourblind, text size or font, etc.
- There is no benchmark test for the graphics.
- A lot of performance hiccups from slowdown to stuttering plus my laptop sounds like it’s going to take off.
- Lighting can at times make picking out enemies hard, could be a me thing, but it is a dark game.
- You cannot save when you want, and I don’t always know when it has been saved.
- The game is just bad at telling you things, and some of it is because you cant read the writing or it’s because it’s not there, but I never felt like I knew what everything was.
- You can get sidetracked and lost.
- Definitely not the three controllers I tried, but the aiming would periodically spin out or lock into a direction, making encounters very painful and frustrating.

Summary
DAVY x JONES – The Thrills and Highlights of Gameplay:
DAVY x JONES throws you headfirst into a surreal pirate afterlife where combat is fast, fluid, and packed with personality. You play as a headless captain and his wisecracking skull, combining melee and ranged attacks with parries, grappling hooks, and charge moves. The world is non-linear, full of breakable objects, lootable shark skulls, and secret areas. You unlock wild abilities like air stomps and combo roars, and can command your skull to distract enemies or collect health. From swinging across cursed islands to slapping contests with your own head, DAVY x JONES keeps the action varied and unpredictable.
DAVY x JONES – Where It Falls Short: Key Negatives:
Despite its charm, DAVY x JONES stumbles in a few key areas. There’s no Steam achievement support, no benchmark test, and accessibility options are lacking, headbob settings are buried, and there’s nothing for colourblind players or text scaling. Performance hiccups are frequent, with stuttering and lighting issues that make enemy visibility a chore. Saving is unclear, and the game often fails to explain mechanics properly. Worst of all, aiming can randomly spin out or lock, making some encounters frustrating and borderline broken.
DAVY x JONES – Immersive Story and Narrative Elements:
The story in DAVY x JONES wastes no time. Betrayed, robbed, and beheaded, you’re dumped into The Locker, a twisted sea of clouds and shadows. The dynamic between Jones the body and Davy the skull, is clever and full of dark humour, adding levity to the eerie setting. Cutscenes and character interactions blend seamlessly with stylised cartoon sequences, and the narrative hooks you early with its cursed lore and looming threat of Blackbeard. It’s a tale of revenge, madness, and redemption told through a truly unique lens.
DAVY x JONES – Visual and Performance Aspects:
Visually, DAVY x JONES is a stunner. From the vibrant boats to the chilling underwater realms, the 3D world is rich and atmospheric. The art direction is bold, and the weapon designs pop. You get full controller support, remappable controls, and a deep graphics menu with options like DLSS, FSR, and HDR. Audio sliders let you fine-tune everything, and the voice work and soundtrack are top-tier. But when the game stutters or slows down, it breaks immersion, and on some setups, it’ll make your laptop sound like it’s ready for takeoff.
DAVY x JONES – Overall Verdict: Is It Worth Playing?:
DAVY x JONES is a wild ride through a cursed pirate underworld, brimming with creativity and chaos. The gameplay is inventive, the world is gorgeous, and the story hits hard. But technical issues and missing accessibility features hold it back from greatness. If you can stomach the hiccups and aim quirks, there’s a lot to love here, especially for players who crave something different. It’s not perfect, but it’s memorable.
