- Two ways to play – online or offline.
- Online can be set to public or friends only, and you can set your region.
- A full 3D game world with 360 degrees camera control.
- Action RPG gameplay.
- Tutorial pop ups as you play.
- Souls like combat, learning patterns, dodge rolling, and stamina management.
- The pickups look awesome with a shimmering blue sphere.
- You kick open treasure chests and at times they can fly off into the world which is bad ass.
- The game uses the shoulder buttons for attacking and blocking.
- Excellent lighting work.
- Mortal strike is a finisher or execution style move you can do on a weakened enemy, and it triggers a sequence.
- The whole game moves at a solid, fast pace, the controls and movement are precise and tight.
- You play in a third-person view.
- The main character you play is an initiate, but you can embody a hero to get powerful.
- You can see enemy health and stamina bars.
- Three hero choices – each has unique abilities and each is a specific class – rock, metal, and fire.
- Damage numbers pop up for both you and the enemies.
- The ability shop lets you spend ability points on new abilities, and you can assign them to the buttons.
- Messages can and are left on the floor.
- Tests you might set pieces are wave-based events.
- Fast loading times.
- When you die, you get a brief breakdown of your performance.
- Generous checkpoints.
- Alden’s retreat is your safe area and here you can swap out your hero, item management, speak with characters, etc.

- As you play the game, you start at floor one and then try to go up floor by floor.
- Death resets your run back to floor one.
- Combat can look spectacular once you finally get to grips with it.
- A death counter shows when you die.
- Pick up and collect resources and materials.
- Enemies can drop items.
- You keep picking up items after death.
- The enemies can and will fight each other.
- A promising game and one to keep an eye on.
Mortal Rite Preview Cons:
- You cannot pause the game even in offline solo.
- Combat really shows its limits when you are facing more than one person.
- I found the FIA character in particular was loose in combat, the movement and time to attack felt off and it caused more frustration than anything.
- Timing and parries are really tricky, it doesn’t help they there is a kind of delay when executing an attempt.
- I think the lock on camera doesn’t work well, it never really picks up the closest enemy, and does transfer between multiple enemies particularly well. The camera and the lock-on mechanic are working independently, and it makes for a trying time.
- The camera can just go mad at times.
- Small claustrophobic arenas.
- Judging enemy attacks is not easy.
- Combat is constantly limited by the stamina as you use it up so quickly.
- Some of the atmosphere gets broken when you can see the enemy health bars from a great distance, it just means you know what is there and it’s not as you would want.
- Constant difficulty spikes.
- The inventory and character menus are very dense.
- A few times I’ve had it where when I reload I start auto running.
- Great ideas, but it just needs to tighten and hone the basics.
