Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue Review Cons:

  • Cannot rebind controls.
  • The music sounds the same in every location and if it does change then it loops so much that you learn to hate it.
  • The platforming is not great.
  • Jumping feels spongy and loose.
  • You never know when you have hit a checkpoint.
  • Not all the cutscenes can be skipped or fast-forwarded.
  • The gems you need to collect are loose and do everything in your power to avoid being picked up.
  • Gems disappear really quickly after dropping.
  • The combat is boring and simple.
  • At many points of a location, the game takes control of the camera and it is not great and jarring, it then feels like you are wrestling with the camera during it.
  • You get very little guidance and progression feels more like you stumble upon it rather than scripted.

Summary

The Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue game, with its decent graphics reminiscent of the film, offers an immersive 3D world with 360-degree camera control. It’s an action platformer game with a download size of 2.93GB and offers both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions with one purchase. The game features open-world locations, hidden areas, bonus crates, and big boss-like encounters. As you progress, you earn new abilities like swirling your head around to damage crates and enemies, wall jumping, and more.

The game supports local multiplayer with up to four characters and offers two playable characters from the upcoming film. It has easy-to-learn controls, constant checkpoints, and a good amount of health for players. Mini-games and rhythm action sequences add variety to the gameplay. Safe areas act as hubs where you can buy costumes for your character and edit your character’s appearance.

However, the game has some drawbacks. The music tends to be repetitive across locations, and the platforming is not as tight as it could be. The combat is simple and might feel boring to some players. The camera control can be jarring at times, and progression often feels stumbled upon rather than scripted. Despite these issues, Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue’s open space and freedom of progression will likely appeal to kids.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
