Glover (QUByte Classics) Review – A Ball-tastic Nostalgia Trip

Glover (QUByte Classics) review – Embark on an enchanting 3D platforming adventure where you control a magical glove, solve clever puzzles, and roll through vibrant worlds. This cult classic from the ’90s returns with all its charm and creativity intact!

Glover (QUByte Classics) Review Pros

  • Fantastic 64 Bit graphics.
  • 177.7MB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Six save slots.
  • Own in-game achievements with completion bars for everything, and then split up into individual areas.
  • You get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game which means you could earn two Platinum trophies.
  • Originally released on the N64, then Playstation 1 in the late 90’s.
  • Video settings – toggle aspect, and filters (none/scan/curve/smooth).
  • Three ways to play – main game, practice, and time trial.
  • Two game difficulties – Easy and Normal.
  • 3D action platformer gameplay.
  • Tutorial tips come from the character Mr Tip, who is around the world.
  • Leaderboards for both difficulties.
  • Can remap the controls.
  • Six areas to unlock – Atlantis, Carnival, Pirates, Prehistoric, Fortress of Fear, and Out of this world.
  • The gallery houses a load of concept art and special artworks.
  • You get full 360-degree camera control.
  • A first-person button so you can look around the level.
  • Fast loading times.
  • The game is a lot of fun and scratches the retro itch, yet it keeps it mostly modern with the controls and performance.
  • It is worth noting that the camera follows you and turns when you do, it works really well, and I only used the manual camera control when looking around.
  • Pressing a button will have your hand point in the direction of your ball or goal, but it is very broad.
  • You are playing with a glove, and you get a ball and move it around to do tasks. Different balls do different things and have various abilities, and you use magic to change the ball type.
  • Garibs are all over the levels, and you get an extra life after every 40 Garibs collected.
  • You have a main hub in the castle, and this lets you pick your level, and you can replay them.
  • Earn bonus points by collecting Garibs fast or by collecting them with your ball.
  • I forgot how cool of a character Glover is.
  • As a glove, you can use the ball as I mentioned, but you can also slap and slam enemies or break weak blocks.
  • Ever so ever-so-slight puzzle elements throughout the level.
  • Mid-level checkpoints throughout.
  • You can fast travel back to checkpoints.
  • The game uses a three-heart life system.
  • HUD-wise, you get your health, score, and how many Garibs you have, and how many are in the level total.

Glover (QUByte Classics) Review Cons

  • You don’t get any way to change the graphics from the original to the smoother graphics on the fly.
  • No way to invert the axis or change the sensitivity.
  • A bit of a bummer that you get no game manual scans or anything.
  • You honestly don’t get a lot of help with guidance or what you have to do.
  • Only one border art choice.
  • New players will have a rougher initial time as they learn all the ball types and learn the controls.
  • The camera really needs a reset button.
  • Learning all the movements and how the ball works is a mission in itself.
  • I was never sure when it actually saved.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
