In Woods Review (Steam)

In Woods Review

In Woods Review. In Woods is a roguelike survival game set in a forest. Fight different monsters, and craft items, and defeat the final boss for victory. In each game, you’ll face numerous attacking monsters. Fight against them and survive for as long as possible. As you defeat a certain number of monsters, your character will level up and have the opportunity to choose a magic item.

In Woods Review Pros:

  • Nice low poly style graphics.
  • 1.62GB download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Graphics settings – fullscreen, and enhanced effect.
  • Gameplay settings – damage popups, and auto-attack on or off.
  • Full controller support.
  • Four locations – Greenfield, Skeleland, Robozone, and Poisohell.
  • Action survival gameplay.
  • Earn exp and level up to choose one of three random upgrades or abilities.
  • 2.5D game World.
  • Simple to get into, even more so when you turn auto attack on.
  • Plays a bit more like a twin-stick shooter game as the left stick moves you and the right stick aims your attacks regardless of whether they are auto or manual.
  • Coins drop from smashing pots around the level.
  • Chop down trees.
  • You have a clear Hud showing health, exp, coins, etc.
  • Happy bouncy soundtrack.
  • End-of-life breakdown showing time, damage, kills, wood collected, and coins collected.
  • Survivor rank is your overall Central rank where exp is added at the end of a run.
  • Use coins (as they stay after death) to buy permanent upgrades to stats like health, exp earned, attack speed, etc.
  • The items menu fills in as you find items and acts like a collection.
  • 16 character types to unlock, and each one shows the unlock criteria and progress made.
  • boss turns in each lgetting for things like kill X amount of bosses or survive for so long.
  • Lightning-fast load times. felthly addictive.
  • You can refund and reuse coins whenever you want.
  • Beating bosses and mini-bosses drop a chest for a bonus higher rarity upgrade or ability, then you can craft an item of you have the resources.
  • I love the look and atmosphere of the game.
  • It’s simple but very effective at addictive gameplay loops.
  • Fantastic locations.
  • Great enemy and boss designs.
  • I like how it incorporates crafting into the game without it feeling like needless bloat or being a distraction.

In Woods Review Cons:

  • Bare minimum graphic options.
  • No actual tutorial, it’s not really needed but still.
  • Cannot remap the controls, again not needed but I’m here to educate.
  • The damage numbers are huge and get in the way, I like seeing the damage I do but it is off-putting.
  • You don’t get any notice or fanfare for a boss turning up or getting defeated.
  • The music is fine but is on a loop so you do tire of them.
  • For me the pacing just felt off, it takes too long to kill enemies and if you don’t get lucky with your pickups then you will just get overwhelmed and spend ages just doing nothing.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
