Red Dead Redemption Review Cons:

  • Does not have any multiplayer.
  • You cannot remap the controls.
  • Cheats disable autosave and achievements.
  • You don’t get any confirmation or warning about skipping cutscenes.
  • Can’t turn blood on and off.
  • The controls haven’t been updated to make using the map or anything easier.
  • Had missions bug out like the first sheriff one where you have to tail Walton, the sheriff didn’t move or react until I died and it restarted the mission and fixed itself.
  • Huge initial info dump.
  • The follow someone on a horse mechanic is hit and miss if it matches their direction.
  • You have to play a fair bit until the game opens up to the point where you can do what you want.
  • No colorblind settings.
  • It’s really hard to make out the X on the mini-map at times.
  • Every action has an animated sequence from looting to skinning.
  • People will challenge duels and they are optional otherwise it’s a mini-game.
  • Had the game not play well with Steam big picture mode like achievements not popping up and the controller messing about.
  • Getting rid of a wanted level is a real pain as it can only be done at train stations and these bugs out or close down when you are being chased or in a wanted town.
  • The tutorial pop-ups at times seem really delayed and small in size so you get a lot of them.
  • Earned achievements don’t pop up on the screen and you can’t sort them to see what you have.
  • Instances of people walking into walls or horses clipping.
  • The camera goes crazy when breaking into horses.
  • The AI patching isn’t always great.
  • Still cannot skip the skinning animations.
  • Been in gunfights and all of a sudden my horse will be there and die.
  • Had inexplicable fights or bounties when doing missions.

Summary

Red Dead Redemption offers a visually appealing experience with decent graphics and a manageable download size of 11.4GB. The game supports Steam achievements, and full controller support, and has its in-game achievements. Integration with the Rockstar Games launcher and social club, along with cloud save support for both Steam and Rockstar, adds to the convenience. Upon initial boot-up, players can pick their graphics preset, and the game provides three save slots and a fourth autosave slot. The package includes the main game and the Undead Nightmare DLC, offering a comprehensive experience.

The game features extensive display and graphics settings, allowing players to customize brightness, contrast, saturation, kill effect, subtitles, and more. Controller settings include options for inverting the axis, sensitivity sliders, dead zone sliders, auto center, flip triggers, and more. Full mouse and keyboard support is also available, with options to remap controls and adjust sensitivity. Players can choose between two difficulties – Normal and Hardcore – and can select and play the Undead Nightmare DLC straight from the main menu. The game boasts fast loading times, tutorial pop-ups, in-game cutscenes, and a full 3D world with 360-degree camera control. Regular autosaves ensure progress is not lost.

Set in the Wild West, Red Dead Redemption offers action-adventure gameplay with amazing voice work for every character. The main quest is complemented by optional side quests that can be given or found randomly. The massive open world is atmospheric, with a brilliant soundtrack and smooth transitions between cutscenes and gameplay. The mini-map, though basic, shows objectives, and the game includes a Golden Guns option, targeting modes, and a variety of cheats. The horse mechanics, including a stamina bar and the ability to match speeds with companions, add depth to the gameplay. The game also features a day and night cycle with weather effects, adding to the immersive experience.

However, there are some drawbacks. The game lacks multiplayer and does not allow for remapping controls. Cheats disable autosave and achievements, and there is no confirmation or warning about skipping cutscenes. The controls have not been updated to make using the map easier, and there are instances of missions bugging out. The following mechanic on horseback can be hit or miss, and the game requires a fair bit of play before it opens up. There are no colorblind settings, and the mini-map can be hard to read at times. Every action has an animated sequence, which can be tedious. The game has issues with Steam big big-picture mode, and getting rid of a wanted level can be challenging. Tutorial pop-ups can be delayed and small, and earned achievements do not pop up on the screen. There are instances of characters walking into walls or horses clipping, and the camera can go crazy when breaking into horses. The AI patching is not always great, and skinning animations cannot be skipped. Gunfights can be interrupted by random horse appearances, and inexplicable fights or bounties can occur during missions.

In summary, Red Dead Redemption is a visually appealing action-adventure game set in the Wild West, offering a rich 3D world, engaging characters, and a variety of gameplay options. While there are some performance issues and limitations with controls, the game’s strengths in storytelling, exploration, and interaction make it a worthwhile experience for players who enjoy immersive adventures. It has been a long wait but it was worth it, Replaying these two games on PC is finally a reality and a must-play.
