Remnant: From the Ashes Review (Nintendo Switch OLED)

For this Remnant: From the Ashes Review, where the world has been thrown into chaos by an ancient evil from another dimension. As one of the last remnants of humanity, you must set out alone or alongside up to two other survivors to face down hordes of deadly enemies to try to carve a foothold, rebuild, and retake what was lost.

  • 8GB download size.
  • Action RPG gameplay.
  • Opening tutorial section.
  • Invert axis and sensitivity sliders.
  • Two character slots.
  • Three game modes – campaign, adventure mode, and survival mode.
  • You can read roll any of the modes as you get randomized layouts and bosses.
  • Three character classes.
  • Dark Souls-like experience from the respawns of enemies at checkpoints and the level structure.
  • Really good level of design.
  • Breakable objects for resources.
  • Enemies can drop resources.
  • You can fast travel between points.
  • Merchants to buy and sell items/gear with.
  • Equip perks to a weapon like fire shots or heal with shots.
  • Full crafting mechanic from gear to items and upgrading gear.
  • Loadout is a main weapon, a secondary weapon, and a melee piece.
  • The worlds are nasty dark places but have grotesque beauty.
  • Combat especially the melee feels so meaty.
  • Guns are all handled differently.
  • Health bars of enemies show when you engage.
  • The enemies usually hunt in packs and love to bunch up.
  • You can join other people’s games and get unique drops from the bosses if they are not in your game world roll.
  • The later levels add a sense of tension with tight hidden corridors and hidden ledges etc.
  • Boss fights are a huge Dark Souls level of huge, impactful, and memorable.
  • You can heal teammates.
  • The draw of weapons and items is to add modifiers to the weapons like earn health or do fire/poison etc.
  • Very difficult experience.
  • Not as brutal as the Souls games as when you die you don’t lose stuff so you can afford to take risks.

Summary

It is certainly a huge achievement to get a game like this running well on the handheld Nintendo Switch OLED. Yes, it has had a bit of a graphical downgrade and does have a few bits of slowdown but man oh man is it still a must-buy for fans of the genre. My review is late because I couldn’t stop playing it despite running through it already on the pc, I just love the world, the loop of finding equipment and loot, it’s just a real gamers game. The Switch version is a bit of a letdown in terms of having all the extras but honestly, the game runs well, looks great, and is just as difficult and as addictive as before!

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
