Review: 20XX (PlayStation 4)
20XX is a roguelike action platformer that you can play with a friend. Jump and shoot your way through ever-changing levels, collect awesome new powers and battle mighty bosses in the name of saving the human race maybe!
Pros:
- Awesome crisp cartoon graphics.
- 5.88GB Download size.
- Platinum trophy.
- Full stats section with a breakdown for each character.
- Opening tutorial level. (Repeatable)
- Roguelike action platformer gameplay.
- Two default characters- Nina (ranged) and Ace (melee). You can swap between them at any time when in the hub in between runs.
- Online leaderboards that can be filtered by all the different run types.
- Challenges- Daily, Hardcore daily, Weekly, Hardcore weekly, Rush job and speed racer.
- Three play styles- Singleplayer, couch co-op and online co-op.
- Three difficulties- Reverant (easy where you have 3 lives) Normal and Defiant (harder enemies but better drops).
- Fast loading times.
- Fantastic soundtrack.
- Datalore- Info on all unlocks, Bosses, Enemies, Weapons etc and you can only view them once you have discovered/encountered them.
- Options- Damage numbers, Double tap dash, Quick drop, Health display, Screen shake and display runtime.
- Player one and two have their own set of options.
- Analog and d-pad support.
- Level end- Get a power from the boss, cash or a random unlock as a prize. You only get one choice from the three. You also get a bonus chest with random loot.
- Save and exit in between levels.
- Levels are randomly generated.
- Finish a level, Pick your next level from three random choices.
- Pick up health in levels.
- End of level boss fights.
- You only lose health when falling off screen instead of instant death.
- Default powers- Dash, Jump, High jump, melee/shoot and wall jump.
- End of run breakdown.
- Tight responsive controls.
- Bosses have a Pokemon vibe with the way you get hooked to discovering and fighting them all.
- Alternate paths available in every level.
- Difficult.
- Infinite replayability.
- Clear Megaman love.
- Excellent in co-op play.
Cons:
- Cannot earn trophies on easy difficulty.
- No duck button.
- Can only shoot sideways.
- Hard to distinguish between platforms and the background.
- Difficult.
- Doesn’t always make it clear what you get upon death.
