Challenge the horrifying reign of Nazi terror and battle an immortal evil in Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics; a turn-based tactical strategy game set in the award-winning Achtung! Cthulhu universe. Here is our Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics review:

Pros:

  • Nice graphics.
  • 2887MB Download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Controller support.
  • Graphics- Presets, Texture quality, AA, Anisotropic filtering, Ambient occlusion, Shadow quality, Shadow resolution, Soft particles, Fullscreen, Resolution, and v-sync.
  • Three difficulties- Easy, Normal and Hard.
  • Optional tutorial.
  • Turn-based strategy gameplay. Xcom like.
  • World map level select.
  • Earn EXP, Level up to earn stars that you put into a skill tree to unlock new buffs/abilities/improve stats. Each character has their own skill tree.
  • Optional side missions.
  • Character screen where you can change loadout and do your skill tree.
  • Missions show rewards on the map so you can decide beforehand.
  • Unlock/earn new attachments and weapons.
  • Stress- Getting shot at or seeing Eldritch horrors will increase your stress level and filling it will have your character acting erratic and miss shots.
  • Levels are big areas and you can freely move around when out of combat and you need to seek out the enemy encounters.
  • Hit chance percentage is shown before you take the shot.
  • AP- Action points with every action taking x amount of AP to determine what you can and cannot do.
  • Camera- Move around and zoom in and out.
  • Cool locations like broken down buildings and jungles.
  • Map and enemies are blacked out until discovered.
  • Easy to jump into.
  • End of level breakdown.
  • Can compare weapons and a handy green circle will highlight better weapons when adjusting your loadout.
  • Save when you want.
  • Feels very moreish.
  • Satisfying gameplay.

Cons:

  • No fast forward button for enemy turns.
  • No online mode.
  • Same four characters in your squad and they are very generic.
  • Running between fights is boring as you cannot actually find or do anything extra. It is a big time filler.
  • Combat has little variation.
  • Shooting from cover is very OP and staying behind cover guarantees more wins than losses.
  • Same canned phrases from characters over and over.
  • Map soon outstays its welcome as you stay in the same set of areas.
  • Few audio bugs.
  • Slight delay in registering actions.
  • No other modes like survival or Ironman mode.
  • No Steam trading cards.

Summary

Now here we have a bit of a conundrum, On the one hand the game is a lot of fun and the sense of progression is fantastic as you build up your almighty loadout and mix things up, Then, on the other hand, it is very safe, Combat is very basic even with new weapon types, The flow never changes. Being able to run around between fights sounds cool but in practice acts as a deterrent as it fills in extra time with no filler. Hiding behind walls really breaks all the rules as you are almost invincible. That all aside I did enjoy playing it and I was just left wanting more, More level variation, More modes, and a better or more action-packed combat situation. I never felt frustrated only disappointed. In short, its a game you can finish a=in a couple of sessions and have fun doing it but you won’t return and the combat is very lackluster.
