Review: Alien Breed PlayStation Mobile
Alien Breed is the classic sci-fi, top-down shooter developed by Team17. Launching originally in 1991, Alien Breed has now been remade for PlayStation Mobile, which can only mean one thing… it’s time to turn down the lights, turn up the sounds and encounter Alien Breed again!
I missed playing this game first time round but I have always heard good things about it. Alien Breed is 21 years old (bet you feel old now innit) and to celebrate we get a re-release on PlayStation Mobile games. Run, shoot, open doors and kill aliens is the name of the game. First choice available to you is whether you would like to play the game in the new enhanced graphics and control scheme or the old skool graphics with the old 8 directional controls. Either one looks really good, the controls are tight and work really well. The game oozes atmosphere as you explore the land finding money and keys for doors. New addition is the ability to spend money in the in game shop and here is where you can buy lives, med kits, keys and new guns. Everything can be bought in single form or packs of multiples.
With just 6 levels for the main game you cant help but think that is a bit short? you would be right but Team 17 have your back. Not only do you get the main game but you also get:
- Special Edition: Released in 92 the game gives you 12 additional levels.
- Convergance: Offering another 4 levels of play
- Valiance: Again offering another 4 levels of play.
So as you can see you get a lot for your money. Chuck in in-game achievements and excellent music effects and you have a winner. If your looking to get all retro up in here on your PlayStation mobile games device, then look no further than this game. I played it on the Vita and it looked stunning. Using twin sticks for movement and shooting, the game is easy to play and wont take long to hook you in. Yes it may be short but its a perfect bite sized, pick up and play title that will see you revisiting the darkened alien infested corridors. The achievements could do with alerting you a bit better as its just a small icon top left, somewhere you dont tend to look. Blink and you will miss it but then your not playing the game for achievements so its a minor gripe.
Its an all in one package containing loads of levels, enhanced or original graphics, instruction manual, achievements. Its a bargain at just 3.19 and worth it just for the nostalgia alone. New players will have no problem getting into the series and this is probably the cheapest and easiest way to do so. I love the game and even though I finished a few of the packs already, I know I will go back and play it more.
