Review: Azkend 2 (XB1)

While traveling from Liverpool to New York your ship was pulled down into a massive maelstrom and you woke up in a place that may have never been gazed upon by the eyes of men. From now on your goal is to ascend from the bowels of the earth and return to civilization.

Pros:

  • Match 3 gameplay. Chain together icons to clear them from the board.
  • Earn passive and active powerups. These can change the game entirely like the ability to use dynamite or freeze time.
  • Each level can change objectives. Pretty much its a case of either clearing the fog/ice then clearing the board or every time you clear icons it will make a blue spot. Either way at the end of doing one of these you then get an item come up on screen that you need to get to the bottom of the screen to collect it.
  • All levels are timed.
  • Level layouts are randomised everyt time you play.
  • 1000 Gamerscore.
  • Innovative new scenarios like clearing icons next to ever moving bugs to attack them before they reach the top or blocks randomly freezing.
  • Download size: 230MB.
  • In between levels is a mini game where it plays out a bit like a hidden object game. Against a timer you are given a small visual hint of a area of the big image in front of you, Simply click it and earn bonus charge up time.
  • Easy controls.
  • Two modes: Story and challenge mode.
  • You can freely choose between unlocked passive and active power ups.
  • Easy to play.
  • Strong one more go ethic.
  • Over 60 levels to play.

Cons:

  • Mini game in between levels has a timer on speed. Not enough time to do anything plus you never get a proper explanation of what to do first time.
  • Constant difficulty spikes Mostly due to the random nature of the level layout.
  • Music is repatitive with the same track being used in each level theme, It will soon get turned off.
  • Story is forgettable and not worth reading.
  • No online leaderboards.
  • Chaining can be difficult due to the sensitivity of the controls even after tinkering with them.
  • Little to no replay value story wise.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
