Review: Blaster Master Zero (Nintendo Switch)

In the near future on Earth, a young man named Jason Frudnick boards the battle vehicle SOPHIA III and sets off on an adventure in the subterranean depths of the planet.

Pros:

  • Retro graphics hitting us with an 8 Bit appearance.
  • 183MB download size.
  • How to play section for you to read.
  • Can rebind the buttons.
  • Nine save slots each with copy and delete functions.
  • Tight controls.
  • Game play is that of exploration. You have a vehicle that you use to traverse the lands, But you can also get out in order to reach harder to reach places.
  • You have a main weapon and a sub weapon. One set for on foot and one set for your vehicle.
  • HD rumble support.
  • Game is primarily played in 2D with dungeon style areas playing out almost top down with a isometric feel to them.
  • Multiplayer- Game supports 2 players using the Joycons.
  • Game can be played on the TV, Desktop mode or portable.
  • Wonderful Chiptune OST.
  • The game is based off the NES game from back in the day.
  • Big boss fights, Defeat the boss to unlock new abilities or weapons.
  • Story is not that bad but really takes a back seat to the exploration.
  • Fun to play.
  • Keeps the retro feel.
  • Many different locations to find and explore.
  • The ability to jump out of your vehicle whenever is fantastic along with the water mechanics at work depending on if you are in a vehicle or on foot.
  • Unlocking new weapons can allow you to uncover shortcuts.
  • Collect health/ammo drops from enemies/destructible or find em lieing around.
  • Combat is a frantic shoot em up.
  • Dungeon areas have many mechanics going on. Enemies may attack in waves or there may be timed enviromental things going on. It really mixes the game up.

Cons:

  • Constant difficulty spikes.
  • Controls can take a while to get used to.
  • No proper tutorial.
  • You can feel lost at times.
  • Aiming in the dungeon parts is still a massive pain.
