Review: Bubsy: Paws on Fire (PlayStation 4)

Bubsy Paws on Fire

Oinker P. Hamm is determined to capture every animal in the universe for his “Amazootorium.” Bubsy, fearing mostly for himself, is just as determined to stop him. Two archrivals, stitched together by the cruel knitting needles of fate. No matter who emerges victorious, there is one thing we know for certain: There’s going to be a whole lot of yarn along the way.

Pros:

  • Cool graphics.
  • 2.20gb download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Tutorial intro.
  • Runner gameplay.
  • World map level select.
  • 3 playable characters- Bubsy, Virgil and Woolie. Each one plays completely different and can affect how the level plays out.
  • Victory tokens-one for each character completions on a level.
  • Familiar Bit Trip sounding soundtrack.
  • Shop-buy new outfits with the cash you earn from the levels.
  • A lot of Replayability.
  • Online Leaderboards.
  • Can replay levels.
  • Arnold’s run-bonus game you unlock and plays like a Sonic 2 bonus stage. As you barrel down a tunnel you can go up the walls and collect the shinies.
  • Approachable.
  • Humor throughout.
  • OK, loading screens.

Cons:

  • The view is far away, especially for Bubsy.
  • Some ugly art in places.
  • Not as deep and rewarding as Runn3r.
  • Lackluster Christmas cracker jokes and one-liners.
  • Slow progress as you have to play one level 3 times to maximize your time.
  • Feels watered down and more basic than any of the Runner games.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
