Carmageddon: Max Damage Review Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 13.55GB Download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Works on Playstation 5.
  • Racing gameplay. You can race, wreck other racers and collect power-ups in 3 race conditions.
  • Three save slots.
  • Three modes:
    • Career: Progress through a variety of missions over 16 chapters. Upgrade your rides and unlock new vehicles to compete in.
    • Freeplay: Complete levels in Career to unlock Freeplay for no rules, no limits driving. You can in essence use this as a free-roam option and just cruise around.
    • Multiplayer: Go online with friends or randoms and race.
  • Cool repair mechanic, As you drive you can see your car being repaired and rebuilt in many cases. Parts fly to your car and stick on and its all very slick and you spend your collected credits in it.
  • Three upgrade styles for each car. You can go defensive, Aggressive, or speed. You can swap parts out at the garage.
  • Races are set in huge open areas where you can go nearly anywhere and carve out your own track routes.
  • Game events:
    • Classic Carma: Race, wreck or wreak havoc to win: Destroy all cars, kill all pedestrians, or win the race.
    • Death race: The first player to complete the race wins, although drivers can steal laps from opponents by wrecking them.
    • Ped chase: Kill the highlighted pedestrian first to get the point, Rinse and repeat.
    • Checkpoint stampede: Beat opponents to checkpoints and win the game. Checkpoints randomly spawn on the map.
    • Fox N Hounds: Basically cops and robbers, As the ‘fox’ you need to evade your ‘hound’ opponents until your timer reaches zero.
    • Car Crusher: Waste opponents to win points and lose points if they wreck you.
  • Over 40 routes and arenas to take part in from the streets to beaches to football stadiums.
  • Lots of level verticality. Take the race to the roofs and ramps up high. The game provides many ways for you to go that one step higher.
  • Action replay: In-depth replay editor option. Here you can take screenshots or make videos and edit them, Cut and paste and publish them.
  • Pedestrians are everywhere and splatter blood all over the road and screen as you hit them. Many types are around.
  • Power-ups: Range from shields to tougher attacks or jumping and magnets, A whole host is always found on the track.
  • Online leaderboards support.
  • Arcade presentation.
  • At anytime out of events you can swap what car you are using.
  • Before an event you can move your starting position.
  • What u appreciate is you can get wrecked which in most games is a game over but here just press repair and you are back in.
  • A mini map helps find the markers for events and shows enemies in real time including their destroyed wreckage.
  • Hidden collectables like upgrade coins and tanks.
  • There is a lot of humour but it is rooted in the 90s with its crass shock value. I mean I still laugh at darts so I like the humour here even if it does push it.
  • Many barrels around with power ups attached to some and the yellow ones give credits.
  • When hitting an enemy you get credits along with a pop up of what you’ve done like t bone, or head on etc. I last saw this type of presentation in the Destruction Derby games. Man I miss the Destruction Derby games.
  • The soundtrack is good, it suits it just fine and is aggressive and rock like.

Carmageddon: Max Damage Review Cons:

  • You cannot remap the controls.
  • Loooooong loading times and it doesn’t actually get any better on the PlayStation 5 version.
  • Poor handling model even after upgrading your car. You are constantly fighting with the wheel and corners? Forget about it, the car is always fishtailing and you have to feather the accelerator.
  • Clipping is everywhere.
  • Dated graphics that look more at home on a PS2 or original Xbox. Bland colors do nothing to help.
  • Events are long drawn-out affairs with events taking ages as you wait for the AI to actually race or just do something!
  • You can get lost in events, Checkpoint chasing especially as finding the actual checkpoints is a right pain in the arse.
  • Jumps never let you land well and are just a guaranteed wipeout.
  • AI is either stupid and slow or super strong and overly aggressive, The latter usually evolves around you getting driven around sideways. They also like to just go after you and pin you against a wall.
  • Tries so hard to be controversial from the constant swearing to the boobs to over-the-top violence. I get it it’s meant to be a bit over the top but when controversial turn to cringe, You know it’s gone too far.
  • No atmosphere to it all, Your racing for no purpose and feel no desire to see what’s next.
  • An overhead camera with the map is just pointless, No one in their right mind wants a full-screen overhead map pop-up mid-race just to get directions.
  • Stunts are not worth the hassle.
  • Lack of decent camera angles.
  • May have loads of tracks and arenas but that doesn’t mean they actually vary much.
  • The music is just a selection of heavy metal and rock and is very repetitive.
  • Little replay value.
  • The career mode is a slog and not that fun to play, no story or cutscenes make them feel like a collection of events nothing more.
  • The car rest button is used a lot for many reasons and it just sucks that you pay credits each time to use it.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
