Review: Caterpillar Royale (Nintendo Switch)

Caterpillar Royale is an action game where you eat food, grow your caterpillars, and fight enemies to survive. Your caterpillars die if their heads touch obstacles or enemy-caterpillars. It’s a merciless caterpillar battle royale!

Pros:

  • OK, graphics.
  • 245MB Download size.
  • 3 modes- missions/mini soccer/obstacle course.
  • Help- text-based tutorial about the rules.
  • Gameplay is dependent on mode but the principle foundation remains the same. Eat food to grow, eliminate other caterpillars by having them hit your body.
  • Takes a huge inspiration tip from Snake.
  • 3 power-ups that randomly appear, power/speed/grow.
  • Controls-move and press button to activate power up.
  • Different mission types- collect/grow/kill.
  • 4 player local support.
  • Soccer- a football game with bot and friend support.
  • Dead caterpillars leave food behind.
  • Clear hud showing progress and caterpillar length.
  • Obstacle race- head to head race setting complete with split screen regardless of bot or friend opponent.
  • Missions-play a series of events and earn points to win the championship.
  • Controls well.
  • Quick to grasp concept.

Cons:

  • No touchscreen support.
  • Unskippable opening screens.
  • The learning curve with the movement, it’s not smooth more like it has a hard set of directions.
  • No leaderboard in missions to show where you are.
  • More suited to party play.
  • No online.
  • No unlocks.
  • Looks like a mobile game.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
