Review: Dino Dini’s Kick Off Revival (PS4)

Dino Dini’s Kick Off Revival combines the elements that made Kick Off, its sequel Kick Off 2 and Goal such a success, together with the improved technology offered by the PS4.

Kick Off Revival (4)

Pros:

  • Retro inspired graphics.
  • 1.56GB download size.
  • Free continuous updates and DLC.
  • Game modes: Single player, Local two player, Two player online, European cup and practice.
  • Practice contains a host of optional missions like score a header, Score from a lob.
  • Old school game play, The ball doesn’t always stick to your feet, Player movement is fast.
  • Mini map to show player locations.
  • 20 Trophies.
  • Bar at the bottom of the screen shows player names, Score and formation.
  • You can choose from a few formations.
  • Goal celebrations.
  • Can randomize European cup groups.
  • European cup allows you to sim games.
  • European cup supports two player.
  • The game is a lot more tactical than arcade.
  • Bar on each player is used to dictate pass/shot speed.
  • After touch mechanic, Add swerve to shots.
  • Made for fans of the series as it is nigh on identical to the earlier games.
  • Dev prepared to listen and act on feedback.

Cons:

  • No tutorial for new players.
  • No substitutions.
  • No yellow or red cards.
  • You can change formations but you have to find the menu option first!
  • Just European teams.
  • No controller layout or customization options.
  • No difficulty options.
  • Ball physics seem a tad too high with the game playing out more like pinball than football.
  • No real atmosphere to the game at all, The sound effects hardly chime in, An odd drum noise or clap here and there is it.
  • Not official names.
  • AI can behave quite odd. For instance they love crowding the ball even though they are in possession, They run the wrong way for parts. Oh and you can foul yourself and get a free kick.
  • Little SP replay ability.
  • Hard trophy list.
  • Music is not fantastic but it is on constant loop.
  • Feels like every other tackle is a foul.
  • Hard to get into for a new generation of players.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
