Review: EVE: Valkyrie (PSVR)

Join the Valkyrie, an outlaw band of galactic pirates, and take up arms to claim what’s yours. Trade cannon fire for cash as you chase wealth and notoriety on the edge of space.

Pros:

  • Awesome graphics, The ships look simply incredibe whilst the vast space areas are no slouch either.
  • Lengthy tutorial covering all aspects of the game.
  • Space shooter gameplay.
  • Daily challenges-You can earn bonus EXP and loot. You can abandon daily challenges.
  • Two game modes: Chronicles which are single player. Combat which is online multiplayer.
  • UI uses the controller and headset as the cursor.
  • Chronicles:
    • Training modules to continue to hone your skills.
    • Recall- You search derelict ships and areas to find the data of lost comrades. Great mode for getting more story.
    • Scout- Free roam.
    • Survival- Wave based combat.
  • Quartermaster is where you can go to customise your ship with new sprays etc. You can also bank any earned EXP and buy implants or any other in store purchases.
  • Detailed cockpit view.
  • Earn EXP to level up and unlock upgrades and new customisable options.
  • Implants are your EXP boosts.
  • Gold and silver currency.
  • Awesome 3D lobbies with animated backgrounds.
  • Full activity breakdown at the end of any session.
  • You do multiplayer against AI first to get to grips with it all.
  • Weapons- You have a normal gun that gets slower the more you hold the button down and you also have lock on missiles.
  • Full controller support for movement and shooting. The headset is used for looking around.
  • Full Platinum trophy.
  • Space combat is satisfying.
  • Very atmospheric especially in the hub as you can see people working and moving around.
  • Deent sound effects.
  • The hud in game is mostly done on your front window of your cockpit and looks really smart.

Cons:

  • Not many modes.
  • Cant always see unlocks earned in game, More relevant at a games end.
  • Combat still feels a bit clunky when you are trying evasive maneuvers or trying to follow a particular target.
  • No proper collision mechanic. You just bounce off each other.
  • Whole game just feels like a huge shooting gallery on acid.
  • IAP are everywhere.
  • Movement is very floaty with the VR headset which can make some feel very nauseous.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
