Review: Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force (Steam)

Long ago, a war raged between two powerful deities. Each was sealed away, their weapons scattered throughout the world. Our hero in this RPG, Fang, happens upon one such weapon and now he alone must choose which deity will awaken again.

Pros:

  • Anime art graphics.
  • Full controller support.
  • 14.6GB download size.
  • Can re map controllers on both K/B and mouse as well as the controller.
  • Options-Text speed, Vibration, Mini ma rotation, Move assist.
  • Comes with a load of DLC like dungeons, Fairies and items and additional difficulties.
  • Five difficulties- Amateur, Easy, Normal, Hard and Hell.
  • Can fast forward, Slow down or skip cutscenes/conversations.
  • English voice and subtitles.
  • Turn based combat.
  • Turn based combat, You are in a circle and can move around it freely. Only attacks or item usage count as your turn.
  • Ongoing tutorial support throughout the game.
  • You see enemies in the open and can surprise attack them.
  • Levels are wide open spaces and you are free to explore.
  • Dungeons are full of loot and enemies, You uncover the map as you travel and must get keys to unlock doors to progress further.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Steam trading cards.
  • Easy to learn combat and controls.
  • Recruit a team by meeting new members.
  • Combo counter.
  • Earn EXP, Level up stats and unlock new abilities.
  • Can play with the camera on the d-pad.
  • Over the top special moves.
  • All characters and indeed the game have their own achievements and finishing them give bonus loot and EXP
  • 99 Save slots so no worry of running out.
  • An excellent first game to play in order to try the series.
  • Its a deep game but keeps it light and simple.
  • Some beautiful locations.
  • Open areas you can freely explore, Dungeons can be explored as well.
  • Story is good with a lot of humour chucked in.

Cons:

  • Annoying menu music.
  • No Japanese voice options.
  • The first few hours are very stop start and slow.
  • After extensive play the game starts to regurgitate itself and repeat dungeon layouts and it all feels samey and repetitive.
