Pros:

  • Beautiful neon wire frame graphics.
  • 313.6MB Download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Audio volume sliders for sound FX, and music.
  • Two controller presets to choose from.
  • Works on Playstation 5ish.
  • Twin stick shooter gameplay.
  • Tutorial like text windows on events and the campaign map and some levels will have brief in game pop ups.
  • 3D stages this time round and some of the stages will move or rotate as you move around.
  • Classic mode: Deadline, King, Evolved, Pacifism and Waves. Re play classic game modes from previous games.
  • Bonus levels, only two but one called Symbolic is a good one where you shoot off against PlayStation symbols.
  • Local co op mode: 1- levels of intense co op only levels.
  • If you are new to Geometry Wars then let me say the enemies are all different shapes and you soon work out that they all act differently like some will avoid you and some will make a bee line for you. It’s like the Ghosts of Pacman if you think about it.
  • The controls are so tight and responsive which is good because without that the game falls apart.
  • Online has public/private options and two game modes: Summoner: Shoot towers to spawn enemies, Take control of towers and shoot your opponents. highest score wins. The other game mode is Stock is where you need to kill the boss first and rack up a score and highest score wins.
  • Adventure mode: Here is where all the new modes, levels and game mechanics come in.
  • Drones: Your side kick in the new mode, You can upgrade it and give it new abilities. Have him shooting for you, collecting points and many more.
  • Collect gaemons to increase your multiplier and ultimately your score.
  • Supers: Aside from your smart bombs you also have supers. These are items that you can use along side bombs and you can buy new ones, Upgrade the quality of them.
  • In adventure mode you can mix and match the supers and drones for limitless combinations.
  • Earn stars in every level. Stars are awarded for scores and unlock new abilities and unlocking new levels.
  • Full online Leaderboards support with friends filtering.
  • Fast addictive gameplay.
  • Manages to nail the speed and playability of the previous games whilst introducing new mechanics and game styles.
  • A Game you just lose yourself to.
  • Get new weapon shot styles by racking up high scores.
  • The goal in Geometry wars for high scores is to keep building your multiplier by collecting the geoms that drop from enemies and not dying as dying resets the speed of enemies etc and it just messes you right up.

Cons:

  • On Playstation 5 you are immediately warned the game experience may suffer playing this PlayStation 4 game on the PlayStation 5.
  • No accessibility options like flashes, screen shakes, and Colourblind support.
  • It’s fine but I found the soundtrack to be more lacking than previous games.
  • The game could have had a decent tutorial level or a central Codex to go back to.
  • Drone can be off putting in the heat of battle.
  • Does not support share play.
  • Co op is offline only and has no online support.
  • Difficulty spikes throughout and it’s more noticeable in the campaign.
  • Two local players cannot go online together.
  • Addictive and will destroy your productivity for the day.

In Summary, Geometry wars is back! Staying true to its roots in every way, Dimensions does an excellent job of keeping the basics down yet re inventing and adding to the overall experience. The new adventure mode is brilliant and introduces you to the many new game modes including the ability to have a side kick which you can upgrade and kit out with new guns. It really is a great game n every way, I found the online was lacking any real depth but it is the first proper attempt at online play so il let it pass. Local co op is very clever with both players having to actually work together and string combos in order to pass the levels. Seriously though the game is like digital crack and should not be missed by anyone. Its a visual assault on eyes and well worth your time, money, blood, sweat and tears!

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
