Review: Heavy Bullets

heavy bullets (5)

Heavy Bullets is a randomized FPS dungeon crawler where players make their way through a colorful maze, while protecting themselves from aggressive creatures and malfunctioning security devices. The goal lies at the end of the 8th level, where they must reset the security mainframe to restore order

Pros:

  • Simple yet eye popping graphics.
  • Full 360 pad support.
  • Easy controls with the keyboard adopting a simple WASD set with mouse buttons for shooting.
  • Huge selection of video options like V-Sync,AA,FOV and even a FPS cap.
  • Game moves at a lightening pace.
  • Movement is tight and responsive harking back to FPS games of old.
  • Online leader boards.
  • Detailed stats screen showing off your best run etc.
  • FPS roguelike where you have limited bullets. You can retrieve bullets but even then that is no easy task. Plan and shoot is the key here.
  • Trippy as hell soundtrack that pleases your ears as much as it trips your mind out.
  • Colour palette in game is very 80s neon looking affair.
  • Levels are randomized so you never have the same game twice.
  • Loads of levels, I say that I only ever got to level 6!
  • Level design is very clever and brilliant to explore the level.
  • Find vending machines to buy bullets, buffs and such like.
  • Minimalist approach with excellent game play execution.
  • Has that one more go mentality.
  • Will warp reality as you know it and vision has been known to be compromised as you start seeing neon walls in your house.

Cons:

  • Can get repetitive but so what.
  • Inconsistent enemy attacks which show themselves as more of difficulty spikes. Harder enemies will be mixed in with stupidly easy enemies.
  • Steep learning curve with a fair few games needed to get to grips with it all.

In Summary, This is a visual assault on your eyes! The game is so simple in every way but yet the game-play just keeps bringing you back for more. It took my eyes a few games to adjust to all the neon colours but once adjusted it was all good. I love the limited bullet mechanic as it forces you to think before you shoot. After long sessions real life can be hard to adjust too, You will see neon walls, hear crazy noises and generally struggle. You could think of this as a LSD simulator complete with rave music. If you could play this in a derelict barn in the country on a Friday night you would get the full experience. That aside you get a cracking little game for next to nothing and its a game that suits long sessions or a quick pick up and play sesh. Well worth a look for FPS fans.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
