Review: Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition (PlayStation 4)

Set out on a grand adventure in this turn-based, retro style, pixel-art RPG, inspired by the great titles of the ’90s. Take on the roles of in-game players taking on the roles of their characters in a traditional pen and paper RPG session in the ultimate meta roleplaying experience.

Pros:

  • Modern pixel graphics.
  • 755.2MB download size.
  • 13 trophies.
  • 3 save slots.
  • Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition has role-playing gameplay that is akin to a Dungeons and Dragons session.
  • Medieval chiptune soundtrack.
  • Optional tutorial.
  • Character sheet–equip/use items, upgrade/unlock skills.
  • Earn EXP, level up and unlock/upgrade abilities.
  • Play how you want.
  • Turn-based combat- turn order icons above everyone’s name.
  • Table- buy new tables that have effects on your game like extra EXP or more item drops etc.
  • Humor throughout.
  • Heavy RPG mechanics but light on the brainpower needed.
  • Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition can get addictive.
  • Crafting- use recipes or even guess!
  • Investigate areas to get better loot.
  • Dice rolls are automatic.
  • Map level select screen.
  • Choose what to do in locations-fight, sleep, shop, random battles.
  • Possible to farm enemies.
  • Coins- in-game currency and used to buy items and investigate areas.
  • Create a party- 7 player types- Jock/cheerleader/rich kid/rocker/goth/lab rat/hipster. 3 races- human/elf/dwarf. 5 classes- cleric/paladin/warrior/mage/hunter.

Cons:

  • Can get very grindy.
  • Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition is a slow starter.
  • RNG dependant.
  • Tool icons/tips don’t show so it makes it hard to know what is what.
  • Way too much reliance on gold and it’s very sparse at least early game.
  • No control layout screen.
  • Cannot rebind controls.
  • Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition features no Platinum trophy.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
